Lamentations 5
Remember, Hashem, what is come upon us; 1 consider, and behold our reproach. 1
Our nachalah is turned over to zarim, 1 our batim (houses) to foreigners. 1
We are yetomim and fatherless, 1 immoteinu are like almanot. 1
We must pay kesef for our own mayim; 1 our wood is sold unto us. 1
Our necks are under persecution; 1 we are weary, and have no rest. 1
We have submitted to the Mitzrayim, 1 and to the Assyrians, to get enough lechem. 1
Avoteinu have sinned, and are no more; 1 and we have borne their iniquities. 1
Avadim have ruled over us; 1 there is none that doth deliver us out of their yad. 1
We get our lechem with the peril of our lives 1 because of the cherev of the midbar. 1
Our skin was hot like an oven 1 because we burn with ra'av (hunger, famine). 1
They ravished the nashim in Tziyon, 1 and the betulot in the towns of Yehudah. 1
Sarim (princes) are hanged by their yad; 1 the faces of Zekenim were not respected. 1
They took the bochurim to grind, 1 and the ne'arim staggered under the wood. 1
The zekenim have ceased from the sha'ar, 1 the bochurim from their music. 1
The joy of our heart is gone; 1 mekholeinu (our dance) is turned into mourning. 1
The ateret is fallen from our head; 1 woe unto us, for we have sinned! 1
For this our lev is faint; 1 because of these things our eyes are dim. 1
Because of the Har Tziyon, which is desolate, 1 the jackals prowl upon it. 1
Thou, Hashem, remainest forever; 1 Thy throne from generation to generation. 1
Why dost Thou forget us forever, 1 and forsake us for so long? 1
Restore us, Hashem, to Thyself 1 that we may return; 1 renew yamenu (our days) as of old. 1
Unless Thou hast utterly rejected us 1 and Thou art angry with us beyond measure.
