Obadiah 1

The chazon (vision) of Ovadyah. 1 Thus saith Adonoi Hashem concerning Edom: 1 We have heard a report from Hashem, 1 and an envoy is sent among the Goyim, 1 Arise ye, and let us rise up against her (Edom) in battle. 1

Hinei, I have made thee small among the Goyim; 1 thou art greatly despised. 1

The zadon (pride, presumption, arrogance) of thine lev (heart) hath deceived thee, 1 thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, 1 whose habitation is high; 1 that saith in his lev: 1 Who shall bring me down to the ground? 1

Though thou exalt thyself to soar as the nesher, 1 and though thou set thy nest among the kokhavim (stars), 1 thence will I bring thee down, 1 saith Hashem. 1

If ganavim (thieves) came to thee, if shodedei lailah (robbers by night) — 1 oh how art thou cut off! 1 — would they not have stolen only till they had enough? 1 If the grape gatherers came to thee, 1 would they not leave some grapes? 1

How is Esav searched out! 1 How are his hidden treasures pillaged! 1

All the men of thy alliance 1 have forced thee and brought thee even to the border; 1 the anshei shlomecha (the men that were at peace with thee) have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; 1 they that eat thy lechem (bread) 1 have laid a mazor (net, trap) under thee; 1 there is none detecting it. 1

Shall I not in that day, saith Hashem, 1 even destroy the chachamim (wise men) out of Edom, 1 and understanding out of the Har Esav? 1

And thy gibborim (mighty men), O Teman, shall be dismayed and lose courage, 1 to the end that every one of the Har Esav 1 may be cut off by slaughter. 1

For thy chamas against thy brother Ya'akov, 1 bushah (shame) shall cover thee, 1 and thou shalt be cut off l'olam (for ever). 1

In the day that thou stood aloof on the other side, 1 in the day that the zarim (strangers) carried away captive his forces, 1 and foreigners entered into his gates, 1 and cast lots for Yerushalayim, 1 even thou wast as one of them. 1

But thou shouldest not have gloated over the day 1 of thy brother in the day of his misfortune; 1 neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the Bnei Yehudah 1 in the day of their destruction; 1 neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly 1 in the Yom Tzarah (Day of Trouble). 1

Thou shouldest not have entered into the sha'ar Ami (gate of My people) 1 in the day of their calamity; 1 yea, thou shouldest not have looked down on their affliction 1 in the day of their calamity, 1 nor have laid hands on their substance 1 in the day of their calamity; 1

Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossroads, 1 to cut off those of his that did escape; 1 neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did survive 1 in the Yom Tzarah. 1

For the Yom Hashem is near upon all the Goyim: 1 as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: 1 thy reward shall return upon thine own head. 1

For as ye have drunk upon My Har Kodesh (Holy Mountain), 1 so shall all the Goyim drink continually; 1 yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, 1 and they shall be as though they had not been. 1

But upon Mount Tziyon shall be deliverance, 1 and there shall be kodesh (holiness); 1 and the Beis Ya'akov shall possess their inheritances. 1

And the Beis Ya'akov shall be an eish (fire), 1 and the Beis Yosef a flame, 1 and the Beis Esav for stubble, 1 and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; 1 and there shall not be any remaining of the Beis Esav; 1 for Hashem hath spoken. 1

And they of the Negev shall possess Har Esav; 1 and they of the Shefelah, the Philistines; 1 and they shall possess the fields of Ephrayim, 1 and the fields of Shomron; 1 and Binyamin shall possess Gil'ad. 1

And those of the Golus of Bnei Yisroel 1 shall possess that of the Kena'anim, even unto Tzarphat; 1 and those of the Golus of Yerushalayim, which is in Sepharad, 1 shall possess the cities of the Negev. 1

And Moshi'im (Deliverers) shall come up on Mount Tziyon 1 to judge the Har Esav; 1 and HaMamlachah (the Kingdom) shall be Hashemʼs.
