Zephaniah 3

Hoy (woe) to her that is filthy and polluted, 1 to the oppressing city! + 3:1 i.e., Jerusalem 1

She obeyed not the voice; 1 she received not musar (correction); 1 her bitachon (trust) was not in Hashem; 1 she drew not near to her G-d. 1

Her sarim (princes) within her are roaring arayot; 1 her shofetim are evening wolves; 1 they leave nothing for the boker (morning). 1

Her nevi'im are arrogant, anshei bogedot (treacherous persons); 1 her kohanim have profaned the kodesh, 1 they have done violence to the torah. + 3:4 T.N. which they were ordained to faithfully observe and teach 1

Hashem Tzaddik is in the midst thereof; 1 He will do no injustice; 1 boker by boker doth Hashem dispense mishpat; 1 He faileth not; 1 but the unjust knoweth no boshet (shame). 1

I have cut off the Goyim; 1 their towers are desolate; 1 I made their streets waste, 1 that none passeth by; 1 their cities are destroyed, 1 so that there is no ish (man), that there is no inhabitant. 1

I said: Surely thou wilt fear Me, 1 thou wilt accept musar (correction, instruction); 1 so that her dwelling place should not be cut off, 1 despite everything for which I punished her; 1 but they rose early, + 3:7 i.e., eagerly 1 and corrupted all their doings. 1

Therefore wait ye upon Me, saith Hashem, 1 until the Yom that I rise up for a prey; 1 My determination is to gather the Goyim, 1 that I may assemble the mamlachot, 1 to pour upon them Mine indignation, 1 even all My charon af; 1 for kol ha'aretz (all the earth) shall be devoured 1 with the eish of My kina (jealousy). 1

For then will I restore to the people 1 a safah berurah (pure language, purified lip), that they may all call upon the Shem Hashem, 1 to serve Him with shekhem echad (one shoulder, one accord). 1

From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My suppliants, 1 even the daughter of My dispersed, 1 shall bring Mine minchah. 1

In that Yom shalt thou not be ashamed 1 for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against Me; 1 for then I will take away out of the midst of thee 1 them that rejoice in thy ga'avah (pride), 1 and thou shalt no more be haughty 1 because of My Har Hakodesh. 1

I will also leave in the midst of thee 1 an afflicted and poor people, 1 and they shall take refuge in the Shem Hashem. 1

The she'erit Yisroel shall not do iniquity, 1 nor speak lies; 1 neither shall a leshon tarmit (tongue of deceitfulness) 1 be found in their mouth; 1 for they shall feed and lie down, 1 and none shall make them afraid. 1

Sing, O Bat Tziyon; 1 shout, O Yisroel; 1 be glad and rejoice with all the lev, 1 O Bat Yerushalayim. 1

Hashem hath taken away thy judgments, 1 he hath cast out thine enemy. 1 The Melech Yisroel, even Hashem, is in the midst of thee; 1 thou shalt not fear evil any more. 1

In that Yom it shall be said to Yerushalayim: 1 Fear thou not; 1 and to Tziyon: Let not thine hands hang limp. 1

Hashem thy G-d in the midst of thee is gibbor; 1 He will save, 1 He will rejoice over thee with simchah; 1 He will quiet [you] in His ahavah (love), 1 He will joy over thee with singing. 1

They that mourn I will gather for the mo'ed (time of the feast), 1 who are of thee [O Tziyon], 1 to whom the cherpah (reproach) + 3:18 of the Golus presses upon them. + 3:18 See 2C 7:10 1

Hinei, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee; 1 and I will save her that is lame, 1 and gather her that was driven out; 1 and I will get them praise and fame 1 in every land of their boshet (shame). 1

At that time will I bring you again, 1 even in the time that I gather you; 1 for I will make you a shem and a tehillah 1 among Kol Amei Ha'aretz (all the peoples of the earth), 1 when I turn back your captivity and restore your fortunes 1 before your eyes, saith Hashem.
