Jeremiah 50
The word that the Lord spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. 1
Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; 1 Publish, and conceal not: 1 Say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; 1 Her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces. 1
For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, 1 Which shall make her land desolate, 1 And none shall dwell therein: 1 They shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast. 1
In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, 1 The children of Israel shall come, 1 They and the children of Judah together, 1 Going and weeping: they shall go, 1 And seek the Lord their God. 1
They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, 1 Come, and let us join ourselves to the Lord 1 In a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. 1
My people hath been lost sheep: 1 Their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: 1 They have gone from mountain to hill, 1 They have forgotten their resting place. 1
All that found them have devoured them: 1 And their adversaries said, We offend not, 1 Because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, 1 Even the Lord, the hope of their fathers. 1
Remove out of the midst of Babylon, 1 And go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, 1 And be as the he goats before the flocks. 1
For lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon 1 An assembly of great nations from the north country: 1 And they shall set themselves in array against her; 1 From thence she shall be taken: 1 Their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; 1 None shall return in vain. 1
And Chaldea shall be a spoil: 1 All that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the Lord. 1
Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, 1 O ye destroyers of mine heritage, 1 Because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, 1 And bellow as bulls; 1
Your mother shall be sore confounded; 1 She that bare you shall be ashamed: 1 Behold, the hindermost of the nations 1 Shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 1
Because of the wrath of the Lord it shall not be inhabited, 1 But it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, 1 And hiss at all her plagues. 1
Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: 1 All ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: 1 For she hath sinned against the Lord. 1
Shout against her round about: 1 She hath given her hand: 1 Her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: 1 For it is the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance upon her; 1 As she hath done, do unto her. 1
Cut off the sower from Babylon, 1 And him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest; 1 For fear of the oppressing sword 1 They shall turn every one to his people, 1 And they shall flee every one to his own land. 1
Israel is a scattered sheep; 1 The lions have driven him away: 1 First the king of Assyria hath devoured him; 1 And last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. 1
Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; 1 Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, 1 As I have punished the king of Assyria. 1
And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, 1 And he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, 1 And his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. 1
In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, 1 The iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; 1 And the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: 1 For I will pardon them whom I reserve. 1
Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, 1 And against the inhabitants of Pekod: 1 Waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the Lord, 1 And do according to all that I have commanded thee. 1
A sound of battle is in the land, 1 And of great destruction. 1
How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! 1 How is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 1
I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, 1 And thou wast not aware: 1 Thou art found, and also caught, 1 Because thou hast striven against the Lord. 1
The Lord hath opened his armoury, 1 And hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: 1 For this is the work of the Lord God of hosts 1 In the land of the Chaldeans. 1
Come against her from the utmost border, 1 Open her storehouses: 1 Cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: 1 Let nothing of her be left. 1
Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: 1 Woe unto them! for their day is come, 1 The time of their visitation. 1
The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, 1 To declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, 1 The vengeance of his temple. 1
Call together the archers against Babylon: 1 All ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; 1 Let none thereof escape: 1 Recompense her according to her work; 1 According to all that she hath done, do unto her: 1 For she hath been proud against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel. 1
Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, 1 And all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the Lord. 1
Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, 1 Saith the Lord God of hosts: 1 For thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. 1
And the most proud shall stumble and fall, 1 And none shall raise him up: 1 And I will kindle a fire in his cities, 1 And it shall devour all round about him. 1
Thus saith the Lord of hosts; 1 The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: 1 And all that took them captives held them fast; 1 They refused to let them go. 1
Their redeemer is strong; 1 The Lord of hosts is his name: 1 He shall throughly plead their cause, 1 That he may give rest to the land, 1 And disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. 1
A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the Lord, 1 And upon the inhabitants of Babylon, 1 And upon her princes, and upon her wise men. 1
A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: 1 A sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed. 1
A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, 1 And upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; 1 And they shall become as women: 1 A sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. 1
A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: 1 For it is the land of graven images, 1 And they are mad upon their idols. 1
Therefore the wild beasts of the desert 1 With the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, 1 And the owls shall dwell therein: 1 And it shall be no more inhabited for ever; 1 Neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 1
As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah 1 And the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord; 1 So shall no man abide there, 1 Neither shall any son of man dwell therein. 1
Behold, a people shall come from the north, 1 And a great nation, and many kings 1 Shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 1
They shall hold the bow and the lance: 1 They are cruel, and will not shew mercy: 1 Their voice shall roar like the sea, 1 And they shall ride upon horses, 1 Every one put in array, like a man to the battle, 1 Against thee, O daughter of Babylon. 1
The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, 1 And his hands waxed feeble: 1 Anguish took hold of him, 1 And pangs as of a woman in travail. 1
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan 1 Unto the habitation of the strong: 1 But I will make them suddenly run away from her: 1 And who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? 1 For who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? 1 And who is that shepherd that will stand before me? 1
Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, 1 That he hath taken against Babylon; 1 And his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: 1 Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: 1 Surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. 1
At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, 1 And the cry is heard among the nations.
