Nahum 3

Hoy (woe) to the ir damim (bloody city)! 1 It is all full of lies and booty; 1 no end to the plunder; 1

The crack of the shot (whip), 1 and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, 1 and of the prancing susim, 1 and of the jolting merkavah (chariot); 1

The parash (horsemen, cavalry) charging, 1 the flash of the cherev and the glittering spear; 1 and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of dead bodies; 1 and there is no end of their geviyot (corpses); 1 they stumble over their geviyot; 1

Because of the multitude of the harlotries of the alluring zonah, 1 the ba'alat keshafim (the mistress of sorceries), 1 that enslaveth Goyim through her prostitutions, 1 and mishpochot through her keshafim; 1

Hineni, I am against thee, saith Hashem Tzva'os; 1 and I will lift thy skirts over thy faces, 1 and I will show the Goyim thy nakedness, 1 and the mamlachot thy shame. 1

And I ( Hashem ) will cast abominable filth upon thee, 1 and make thee contemptibly vile, and will make thee a spectacle. 1

And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee 1 shall flee from thee, and say: 1 Nineveh is in ruins; who will bemoan her? 1 From where shall I seek menachamim (comforters) for thee? 1

Art thou better than No Amon (Thebes), 1 that was situated on the Nile, that had the mayim round about it, 1 whose rampart was the yam, and her waters were her chomah? 1

Ethiopia and Mitzrayim were her strength, and it was boundless; 1 Put and Luvim (Libya) were her allies. 1

Yet she went into golus, 1 she went into captivity; 1 her olalim also were dashed in pieces 1 at the head of all the streets; 1 and they cast goral (lots) for her honorable men, 1 and all her gedolim were bound in chains. 1

Thou also shalt be drunken, thou shalt be hid, 1 thou also shalt seek maoz from the enemy. 1

All thy strongholds shall be like te'enim (fig trees) with the first ripe figs; 1 if they be shaken, 1 they shall even fall into the peh (mouth) of the ochel (eater). 1

Hinei, thy troops in the midst of thee are nashim (women); 1 the gates of thy land 1 shall be set wide open unto thine enemies; 1 the eish shall devour thy (gate) bars. 1

Draw thee water for the matzor (siege), 1 fortify thy strongholds, 1 go unto clay, and tread the mortar, 1 repair the brickwork. 1

There shall the eish devour thee, 1 the cherev shall consume thee, 1 it shall eat thee up like the grasshopper. 1 Make thyself many as the grasshopper, 1 make thyself many as the arbeh (locust). 1

Thou hast multiplied thy merchants more than the kokhavim of HaShomayim; 1 but, like the locust, they strip the land, then fly away. 1

Thy commanders are as the swarming locusts, 1 and thy officials as the great grasshoppers, 1 which camp in the hedges on a cold day, 1 but when the shemesh ariseth they flee away, 1 and their place is whereabouts unknown. 1

Thy ro'im (shepherds) slumber, O melech of Ashur (Assyria); 1 thy nobles sleep; 1 thy people are scattered upon the mountains, 1 and no man gathereth them. 1

There is no healing of thy shever (fracture, injury); 1 thy wound is grievous; 1 all that hear the news of thee 1 shall clap their hands over thy fall; 1 for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed tamid (continually)?
