Jeremiah 10

Hear ye the Davar which Hashem speaketh unto you, O Bais Yisroel.

Thus saith Hashem: 1 Learn not the Derech HaGoyim, 1 and be not in awe of the otot HaShomayim; 1 though the Goyim are in awe of them. 1

For the [religious] chukkot (customs, statutes) of the nations are vain delusions; 1 for one cutteth etz out of the ya'ar (forest), 1 the ma'aseh (handiwork) of the hands of the charash (workman, artisan), with the axe. 1

They deck it with kesef and with zahav; 1 they fasten it with nails and with hammers, 1 that it topple not. 1

They + 10:5 the idols are upright as the tomer (palm tree), 1 but speak not; 1 they must needs be carried, 1 because they cannot go. 1 Be not afraid of them; 1 for they cannot do rah, 1 neither also is it in them to do tov. 1

Forasmuch as there is none like unto Thee, Hashem; 1 Thou art gadol, and Thy Shem is gadol in gevurah. 1

Who would not fear thee, O Melech HaGoyim? 1 For this is Thy due; 1 forasmuch as among all the chachamim of the Goyim, 1 and in kol malchut of them, 1 there is none like unto Thee. 1

But they are altogether stupid and foolish; 1 the etz is a musar havalim (discipline of delusions). 1

Hammered kesef is brought from Tarshish, 1 and zahav from Uphaz, 1 the ma'aseh (work, handiwork) of the charash (workman, artisan), 1 and of the hands of the goldsmith; 1 blue and purple is their + 10:9 the idolsʼ clothing; 1 they are all the ma'aseh (work) of skillful men. 1

But Hashem is the Elohim Emes, 1 He is the Elohim Chayyim, and the Melech Olam; 1 at His wrath ha'aretz shall tremble, 1 and the Goyim shall not be able to endure His indignation.

Thus shall ye say unto them: The g-ds that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and min techot (from under) these heavens. 1

He hath made eretz by His ko'ach, 1 He hath established the tevel (world) by His chochmah, 1 and hath stretched out Shomayim by His understanding. 1

When He uttereth His voice, 1 there is a multitude of mayim in Shomayim, 1 and He causeth the clouds to ascend from the ends of ha'aretz; 1 He maketh lightnings with matar (rain), 1 and bringeth forth the ruach (wind) out of His Otzerot. 1

Kol Adam is stupid in his da'as; 1 every goldsmith is shamed by the pesel (idol); 1 for his nesekh (molten image) is sheker, 1 and there is no ruach in them. 1

They are hevel (vanity, delusion), and the ma'aseh (work) of delusion; 1 in the time of their pekudat (visitation, punishment) they shall perish. 1

The chelek of Ya'akov is not like them; 1 for the Yotzer HaKol (Maker of All, Creator of All) is He; 1 and Yisroel is the shevet (rod) of His nachalah; 1 Hashem Tzva'os Shmo. 1

Gather up thy gear [for Exile] meEretz (from the Land), 1 O besieged inhabitant. 1

For thus saith Hashem: 1 Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of HaAretz at this time, 1 and will bring distress upon them, so that find they may. + 10:18 i.e., what they deserve 1

Oy li (woe is me) for my disaster! 1 My wound is grievous; 1 but I said: Truly this is a sickness, 1 and I must bear it. 1

My ohel is destroyed, 1 and all my tent cords are broken; 1 my banim are gone forth of me, and are no more; 1 there is none to pitch any more my ohel, 1 and to hang up my tent curtains. 1

For the ro'im (shepherds, pastors) are become stupid, 1 and inquire not of Hashem; 1 therefore they have not prospered, 1 and all their flock has been scattered. 1

Hinei, the noise! The report is come, 1 and a great commotion out of Eretz Tzafon, 1 to make the towns of Yehudah desolate, 1 and a haunt of jackals. 1

Hashem, I know that the derech of adam (man) is not in himself; 1 it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. 1

Hashem, correct me, but with mishpat; 1 not in Thine anger, lest Thou bring me to nothing. 1

Pour out Thy fury upon the Goyim that know Thee not, 1 and upon the mishpekhot that call not on Shimecha (Thy Name); + 10:25 See Yoel 3:5; Ac 2:21; Ro 10:13 1 for they have eaten up Ya'akov, 1 and devoured him, and consumed him, 1 and have made his habitation desolate.
