Jeremiah 6
O ye Bnei Binyamin, 1 gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Yerushalayim, 1 and blow the shofar in Tekoa, 1 and kindle the fire signal on Beit-HaKerem; 1 for ra'ah (evil, disaster) appeareth out of the tzafon (north), 1 and shever gadol (great destruction). 1
Bat Tziyon, so beautiful and delicate, 1 I will destroy. 1
The ro'im (shepherds) with their flocks shall come unto her; 1 they shall pitch their ohalim against her all around; 1 they shall pasture each his portion. 1
Prepare ye milchamah against her; 1 arise, and let us go up to attack at noon. 1 Oy unto us! For the yom fadeth away, 1 for the shadows of erev are lengthening. 1
Arise, and let us attack ba'lailah, 1 and let us destroy her fortresses. 1
For thus hath Hashem Tzva'os said: 1 Cut ye down trees, 1 and throw up a solelah (siege ramp) against Yerushalayim; 1 this is the Ir that must be visited [for punishment]; 1 oshek (oppression) is rampant within her. 1
As a well casteth afresh her waters, 1 so she + 6:7 Jerusalem casteth afresh her rah (wickedness); 1 chamas and shod (destruction) is heard in her; 1 before Me tamid (continually) 1 is sickness and wounds. 1
Be thou warned, O Yerushalayim, 1 lest My nefesh depart from thee; 1 lest I make thee desolate, an eretz not inhabited. 1
Thus saith Hashem Tzva'os: 1 They shall thoroughly glean 1 the She'erit Yisroel (the Remnant of Israel) as a gefen (vine); 1 turn back thine yad once again 1 like a grape gatherer over the vine tendrils. 1
To whom can I speak, and give warning, 1 that they may hear? 1 Hinei, their ear is arelah (uncircumcised), 1 and to pay heed is beyond them; 1 hinei, the Devar Hashem is unto them a reproach; 1 they find no pleasure in it. 1
Therefore I am full of the chamat Hashem; 1 I am weary with holding in; 1 I will pour it out upon the olal in the street, 1 and upon the assembly of bocherim together; 1 for even the ish with the isha shall be caught, 1 the zaken, those weighed down with yamim (days). 1
And their batim (houses) shall be turned over unto others, 1 with their sadot and nashim together; 1 for I will stretch out My yad 1 upon the Yoshvei HaAretz (Inhabitants of the Land), saith Hashem. 1
For from the katan of them even unto the gadol of them, 1 every one is given to greediness for unjust gain; 1 and from the navi even unto the kohen, 1 every one doeth sheker (deceit, falsehood). 1
They have provided superficial treatment for Ami, 1 saying: Shalom, shalom; v'ein shalom. 1
Were they ashamed 1 when they had committed to'evah (abomination)? 1 They were not at all ashamed, 1 neither could they blush; 1 therefore they shall fall among them that fall; 1 at the time that I visit them [in punishment] 1 they shall be brought down, saith Hashem. 1
Thus saith Hashem: 1 Stand ye in the derakhim (crossroads), and look, 1 and ask for the netivot olam (old paths), 1 where is the derech hatov (good road, way), and walk therein, 1 and ye shall find margo'a (rest) for your nefashot. 1 But they said, We will not walk therein. 1
Also I set tzofim (watchmen) over you, 1 saying: Pay heed to the kol shofar (sound of the shofar). 1 But they said: 1 We will not pay heed. 1
Therefore hear, ye Goyim, 1 and know, O Edah (Congregation), 1 what will happen to them. 1
Hear, HaAretz (O Earth); 1 hinei, I will bring ra'ah (evil, disaster) upon HaAm Hazeh, 1 even the p'ri (fruit) of their machsh'vot (schemes), 1 because they have not paid heed unto My devarim, 1 nor to My torah, but rejected it. 1
To what purpose cometh there to Me frankincense from Sheva, + 6:20 i.e., southwest Arabia 1 and the sweet cane from a far country? 1 Your olot (burnt offerings) are not acceptable, 1 nor your zevakhim pleasing unto Me. 1
Therefore thus saith Hashem: 1 Hineni, I will lay michsholim (stumblingblocks) before HaAm HaZeh, 1 and the Avot and the Banim together 1 shall stumble upon them; 1 the shakhen (neighbor) 1 and his re'a (neighbor, friend) shall perish. 1
Thus saith Hashem: 1 Hinei, Am (an Army, a people) cometh from the eretz tzafon, 1 and a Goy Gadol is aroused from the ends of the earth. 1
They shall lay hold of keshet (bow) and kidon (spear); 1 they are cruel, and have no mercy; 1 their kol (voice) roareth like the yam; 1 and they ride upon susim, 1 set in array as ish for milchamah 1 against thee, O Bat Tziyon. 1
We have heard the fame thereof; 1 our hands hang limp; 1 tzarah (anguish) hath taken hold of us, 1 and pain, as of a woman in labor. 1
Go not forth into the sadeh, 1 nor walk by the derech; 1 for the cherev of the oyev (enemy) 1 and magur (fear, terror) is on every side. 1
O Bat Ami, gird thee with sackcloth, 1 and roll thyself in ashes; 1 make thee evel (mourning), as for a yachid (only son), 1 most bitter lamentation; 1 for the shoded (destroyer) shall suddenly come upon us. 1
I have set thee for a bachon (tester, assayer) 1 of Ami (My People); 1 that thou mayest know and test their derech (way, conduct). 1
They are all maximum rebels, 1 going about as rachil (talebearers, slanderers); 1 they are nechoshet and barzel; 1 they are all corrupt. 1
The bellows blow, 1 the oferet (lead) is consumed by the eish; 1 the smelterʼs refining is in vain; 1 for the ra'im are not drawn off. 1
Nimas kesef (reprobate silver, rejected silver) shall men call them, 1 because Hashem hath rejected them.
