1Shir HaShirim, which is Sh'lomoʼs. 1
2Let him kiss me with the neshikot (kisses) of his mouth; 1 for better is dodecha (thy love) than yayin (wine). 1
3Tovim is the fragrance of thy shmanim (ointments); 1 thy shem (name) is like shemen (ointment) poured forth; 1 therefore do the alamot love thee. + 1:3 alamot, young unmarried virgins; pl of almah virgin; see Shir Song 6:8; Isa 7:14; Gn 24:43; Ex 2:8; Prov 30:19, where the word has this explicit or implicit meaning throughout the Tanakh; see The Translator to the Reader 1
4Draw me; so will we run after thee; 1 the Melech hath brought me into his chadarim (chambers). 1 We will be glad and rejoice in thee; 1 we will extol dodecha (thy love) more than yayin; 1 uprightly have they loved thee. 1
5Shechorah (black, dark, sun-blackened) am I, yet lovely, 1 O ye banot Yerushalayim, 1 like the oholim (tents) of Kedar, 1 like the curtains of Sh'lomo. 1
6Let your eyes burn not into me because I am black, 1 because the shemesh hath burned its eyes into me; 1 bnei immi (my step-brothers) were angry with me; 1 they made me the keeper of the kramim (vineyards); 1 but mine own kerem (vineyard) have I not kept. 1
7O tell me, thou whom my nefesh loveth, 1 where feedest thou? Where makest thou thy flock to lie down at noon? 1 For why should I be as one who veils herself 1 among the edrei chaverecha (the flocks of thy chaverim, fellow companions)? 1
8If thou know not, O thou fairest among nashim, 1 go thy way forth by the footprints of the tzon, 1 and feed thy young goats 1 beside the mishkenot haro'im (the tents of the shepherds). 1
9O my love, to a susah (mare) 1 among the chariots of Pharaoh do I compare thee. 1
10Thy cheeks are lovely with ornaments, 1 thy tzavar (neck) with necklaces. 1
11Ornaments of zahav will we make for thee, 1 studded with kesef. 1
12While the Melech is at his table, 1 my spikenard perfume has yielded its fragrance. 1
13Dodi (my beloved) is to me 1 a sachet of myrrh that lieth in my bosom. 1
14Dodi (my beloved) is to me as a cluster of henna blooms 1 in the kramim (vineyards) of Ein-Gedi. 1
15See, thou art yafeh (fair), my love; see, thou art fair; 1 thine eynayim are yonim (doves). 1
16See, thou art yafeh (handsome), dodi (my beloved), yea, na'im (pleasing); 1 also our couch is verdant. 1
17The beams of our bais are cedar, 1 and our rafters are cypress.
