Song of Solomon 5
I am come into my gan (garden), my sister, my kallah; 1 I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; 1 I have eaten my honeycomb with my devash (honey); 1 I have drunk my yayin with my cholov (milk). 1 Eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, dodim. 1
I sleep, but my lev waketh: 1 it is the voice of dodi (my beloved) that knocketh, saying: 1 Open to me, my sister, my love, 1 my yonah (dove) tammati (my undefiled, my perfect one); 1 for my head is filled with tal (dew), 1 and my hair with the drops of the lailah. 1
I have put off my kuttonet (kesones, chiton, robe); 1 how shall I put it on? 1 I have washed my feet; 1 how shall I defile them? 1
Dodi (my beloved) thrust his hand through the latch-opening, 1 my heart began pounding for him. 1
I arose to open to dodi (my beloved); 1 and my hands dripped with myrrh, 1 and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, 1 upon the handles of the man'ul (lock, door bolt). 1
I opened to dodi (my beloved); 1 but dodi had withdrawn and gone; 1 my nefesh departed when he spoke; 1 I sought him, but I could not find him; 1 I called him, but he gave me no answer. 1
The shomrim (watchmen) that went about the city found me, 1 they beat me, they wounded me; 1 the shomrei hachomat + 5:7 i.e., the shomrim, the guardians [of the city on the wall] took away my cloak from me. 1
I charge you, O banot Yerushalayim, 1 if ye find dodi (my beloved), 1 what will ye tell him? 1 Tell him shecholat ahavah ani (I am faint with ahavah, lovesick). + 5:8 see 2:5 1
How is thy beloved more than another beloved, 1 O thou fairest among nashim? 1 How is thy beloved more than another beloved, 1 that thou dost so charge us? 1
Dodi (my beloved) is radiant and ruddy, 1 unrivaled by ten thousand. 1
His head is like the purest gold, 1 his hair is wavy and shachor (black) as the raven. 1
His eyes are like yonim (doves) by the streams of mayim, 1 washed with cholov, jewels fitly set. 1
His cheeks are like beds of spices, 1 like sweet flowers; 1 his lips like shoshanim (lilies), 1 dripping sweet scented myrrh. 1
His hands are like rods of zahav set with chrysolites; 1 his body is like a polished work of ivory decorated with sapphires. 1
His legs are like pillars of marble, 1 set upon sockets of fine zahav; 1 his countenance is like the Levanon, 1 bachor (one being choice) like the cedars. 1
His mouth is most sweet; 1 yea, he is machamaddim (altogether desirable). + 5:16 See Song 2:3; Hag 2:7 says Moshiach is the Desired of all Nations 1 This is dodi (my beloved), and this is my friend, 1 O banot Yerushalayim. + 5:16 T.N. The next chapter is commented on extensively in the Orthodox Jewish Bible Introduction. This section is one of the most important Scriptures in the Bible because it buttresses Isa 7:14 and its foundational meaning.
