2Hear 2 and listen, earth; for the LORD + 1:2 When rendered in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, “LORD” or “GOD” is the translation of God’s Proper Name. has spoken: 1 “ I have nourished and brought up children 2 and they have rebelled against me. 1
3The 2 and the donkey his master’s crib; 2 but Israel doesn’t know. 2 My people don’t consider.” 1
4Ah 2 a people loaded with iniquity, 2 offspring + 1:4 or, seed of evildoers, 2 children who deal corruptly! 1 They have forsaken the LORD. 2 They have despised the Holy One of Israel. 2 They are estranged and backward. 1
5Why 2 that you revolt more and more? 1 The whole head is sick, 2 and the whole heart faint. 1
6From 2 but wounds, welts, and open sores. 2 They haven’t been closed, bandaged, or soothed with oil. 1
7Your 2 Your cities are burnt with fire. 2 Strangers devour your land in your presence 2 and it is desolate, 2 as overthrown by strangers. 1
8The 2 like a hut in a field of melons, 2 like a besieged city. 1
9Unless 2 we would have been as Sodom. 2 We would have been like Gomorrah. 1
10Hear 2 Listen to the law of our God, + 1:10 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “ אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim). you people of Gomorrah! 1
11“ What 2 “ I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams 2 and the fat of fed animals. 2 I don’t delight in the blood of bulls, 2 or of lambs, 2 or of male goats. 1
12When 2 who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? 1
13Bring 2 Incense is an abomination to me. 2 New moons, Sabbaths, and convocations— 2 I can’t stand evil assemblies. 1
14My 2 They are a burden to me. 2 I am weary of bearing them. 1
15When 2 Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. 2 Your hands are full of blood. 1
16Wash 2 Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. 2 Cease to do evil. 1
17Learn 2 Seek justice. 2 Relieve the oppressed. 1 Defend the fatherless. 2 Plead for the widow.” 1
18“ Come 2 “Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. 2 Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 1
19If you 2 you will eat the good of the land; 2
20but 2 for the LORD’s mouth has spoken it.” 1
21How the 2 She was full of justice. 1 Righteousness lodged in her, 2 but now there are murderers. 1

25I 2 thoroughly purge away your dross, 2 and will take away all your tin. + 1:25 tin is a metal that is separated from silver during the refining and purification process. 1
26I 2 and your counsellors as at the beginning. 1 Afterward you shall be called ‘ The city of righteousness, 2 a faithful town.’ 1
27Zion 2 and her converts with righteousness. 1
28But 2 and those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed. 1
29For 2 and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen. 1
30For 2 and as a garden that has no water. 1
31The 2 and his work like a spark. 1 They will both burn together, 2 and no one will quench them.”
