Amos 5

Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a kinah (lamentation), O Bais Yisroel. 1

The Betulat Yisroel is fallen; 1 she shall no more rise; 1 she is forsaken in her own land; 1 there is none to raise her up. 1

For thus saith Adonoi Hashem: 1 The city that went out by a thousand 1 will be left a hundred, 1 and that which went forth by an hundred 1 will be left ten, for Bais Yisroel. 1

For thus saith Hashem unto Bais Yisroel: 1 Seek ye Me, and live; 1

But seek not Beit-El, 1 nor enter into Gilgal, 1 and pass not to Be'er-Sheva; 1 for Gilgal shall surely go into golus, 1 and Beit-El shall come to naught. 1

Seek Hashem, and live; 1 lest He break out like eish in Bais Yosef, 1 and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beit-El. 1

Ye who turn mishpat into wormwood, 1 and cast tzedakah to the ground. 1

Seek Him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, 1 and turneth tzalmavet into boker, 1 and maketh the yom into lailah; 1 that calleth for the waters of the yam, 1 and poureth them out upon the face of ha'aretz; 1 Hashem Shmo; 1

Who causeth shod (destruction) to flash upon the strong, 1 and shod upon the fortified city. 1

They hate the mochiach (reprover) [of injustice] in the gate, 1 and they abhor him that speaketh tamim (uprightly). 1

Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, 1 and ye take from him burdens of wheat; 1 ye have built batim (houses) of hewn stone, 1 but ye shall not dwell in them; 1 ye have planted pleasant kramim (vineyards), 1 but ye shall not drink yayin of them. 1

For I have da'as of your manifold peysha'im 1 and your mighty chattaim (sins); 1 they afflict the tzaddik, they take a bribe, 1 and they turn aside the poor in the sha'ar (gate, court) from their right. 1

Therefore the maskil (prudent) shall keep silence in such times; 1 for it is an evil time. 1

Seek tov, and not rah, 1 that ye may live; 1 and so Hashem Elohei Tzva'os shall be with you, 1 just as ye say He is. 1

Hate the rah, and love the tov, 1 and establish mishpat in the sha'ar; 1 it may be that Hashem Elohei Tzava'os 1 will be gracious unto the she'erit Yosef.

Therefore Hashem Adonoi Elohei Tzva'os saith thus: 1 Wailing shall be in all rechovot; 1 and they shall cry in all the public squares, 1 Alas! Alas! And they shall call the ikkar (farmer) to mourning, 1 and such as are skillful of lamentation to wailing. 1

And in all kramim (vineyards) shall be wailing; 1 for I will pass through thee, saith Hashem. 1

Hoy unto you that desire the Yom Hashem! 1 Why do ye seek it? 1 The Yom Hashem is choshech, and not ohr. 1

As if a man did flee from an ari, 1 and a dov met him; 1 or went into the bais, 1 and leaned his hand on the kir (wall), 1 and a nachash bit him. 1

Shall not the Yom Hashem be choshech, and not ohr? 1 Even very dark, and no brightness in it? 1

I hate, I despise your chagim (religious festivals), 1 and I do not savor your atzerot (solemn assemblies). 1

Though ye offer Me olot 1 and your minchot, I will not accept them; 1 neither will I regard your choice shelamim (peace offerings). 1

Take thou away from Me the noise of thy shirim (songs); 1 for I will not hear the melody of thy nevalim (harps). 1

But let mishpat run down as mayim, 1 and tzedakah as a never failing stream.

Did ye offer unto Me zevakhim and minchah in the midbar arba'im shanah, O Bais Yisroel?

But ye have borne Sikkut your king and Kiyun your tzelamim, your star g-d, which ye made for yourselves.

Therefore will I cause you to go into golus beyond Damascus, saith Hashem, Elohei Tzva'os Shmo.
