Amos 8
Thus hath Adonoi Hashem showed unto me: and hinei a basket of kayitz (summer fruit).
And Hashem said: Amos, what seest thou? And I said: A basket of kayitz (summer fruit). Then said Hashem unto me: 1 The ketz (end) is come upon My people Yisroel; 1 I will not again pass by them [and spare them] anymore. 1
And the shirot of the heikhal shall turn to wailings in that Yom, saith Adonoi Hashem; 1 there shall be many dead bodies in every place; 1 they shall cast them forth. 1 Silence! 1
Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, 1 even to make the anivvei aretz (poor of the land) to fail, 1
Saying, When will the Rosh Chodesh be over, 1 that we may sell grain? 1 And Shabbos, that we may market wheat, 1 making the eifah (bushel) small, and the shekel great, 1 and falsifying the balances by mirmah (deceit)? 1
That we may buy the poor for kesef, 1 and the needy for a pair of sandals; 1 yea, and sell the sweepings with the wheat? 1
Hashem hath sworn by the ga'on Ya'akov, 1 Surely I will never forget any of their ma'asim. 1
Shall not ha'aretz (the land) tremble for this, 1 and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? 1 And the whole land shall rise like the Nile; 1 and heave and sink, 1 as by the Nile of Mitzrayim. 1
And it shall come to pass in that Yom, 1 saith Adonoi Hashem, 1 that I will cause the shemesh to go down at noon, 1 and I will darken ha'aretz in the yom ohr (day light); 1
And I will turn your chagim into mourning, 1 and all your shirot into lamentation; 1 and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, 1 and baldness upon every rosh; 1 and I will make it as the mourning of a yachid (only son), 1 and the end thereof as a yom mar (bitter day). 1
Hinei, the yamim come, saith Adonoi Hashem, 1 that I will send a ra'av (famine) in the land, 1 not a ra'av (famine) of lechem, nor a thirst for mayim, 1 but of hearing the Divrei Hashem; 1
And they shall wander from yam to yam, 1 and from the tzafon (north) even to the mizrach (east), 1 they shall run to and fro to seek the Devar Hashem, 1 and shall not find it. 1
In that Yom shall the betulot hayafot (fair virgins) 1 and bochurim faint for thirst. 1
They that swear by the sin of Shomron, 1 and say: Chai Eloheicha, O Dan; 1 and: The Derech Be'er-Sheva liveth; 1 even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
