Proverbs 13
1A ben chacham heareth his musar av, 1 but a scoffer heareth not ge'arah (scolding, rebuke). 1
2An ish shall eat tov by the fruit of his peh (mouth), 1 but the nefesh of the bogedim (unfaithful ones, traitors) shall eat chamas. 1
3He that is shomer over his peh (mouth) guards his nefesh, 1 but he that openeth wide his sfatayim (lips) shall have ruin. 1
4The nefesh of the atzel (sluggard, lazy one) desireth, and hath nothing, 1 but the nefesh of the kharutzim (diligent ones) shall have ample provision. 1
5A tzaddik hateth sheker, 1 but a wicked man is shamefully loathsome, and bringeth disgrace. 1
6Tzedakah is guard over him whose derech is blameless, 1 but wickedness overthroweth the chattat (sinner). 1
7There is one who maketh himself out to be rich, yet hath nothing; 1 there is one that maketh himself out to be poor, yet hath hon rav (great wealth). 1
8The riches of an ish is kofer (ransom) for his nefesh (life), 1 but the poor heareth no threat. 1
9The ohr (light) of the tzaddik rejoiceth, 1 but the ner (lamp) of the resha'im (wicked) shall be put out. 1
10By zadon (pride) cometh only contention, 1 but with the teachable is chochmah. 1
11Hon (wealth) gotten by dishonesty shall be diminished, 1 but he that gathereth incrementally shall have an increment. 1
12Hope deferred maketh the lev sick, 1 but when the ta'avah (desire) cometh, it is an Etz Chayyim (Tree of Life). 1
13He who despiseth the davar shall be destroyed, 1 but he that feareth the mitzvah shall be rewarded. 1
14The torat chacham (teaching of the wise) is a makor chayyim (fountain of life), 1 to turn one away from the snares of mavet. 1
15Seichel tov giveth favor, 1 but the derech bogedim (way of traitors) is hard. 1
16Every prudent man acts with da'as, 1 but a kesil (fool) displays his folly. 1
17A malach rasha falleth into rah (trouble), 1 but a tzir emunim (trustworthy envoy) is marpeh (healing). 1
18Poverty and shame shall be to him that disdains musar, 1 but he that is shomer over tokhakhat (reproof) shall be honored. 1
19The ta'avah (desire, longing) fulfilled is sweet to the nefesh, 1 but it is to'evat kesilim (the abomination of fools) to depart from rah. 1
20He that walketh with chachamim shall be wise, 1 but a companion of kesilim (fools) shall come to harm. 1
21Ra'ah (disaster) pursueth chatta'im (sinners), 1 but tov is the reward of the tzaddikim. 1
22A tov (good man) leaveth an inheritance to his bnei banim, 1 and the wealth of the choteh (sinner) is laid up for the tzaddik. 1
23Rav ochel (much food) is in the untilled ground of the poor, 1 but for want of mishpat (justice) it is swept away. 1
24He that spareth his shevet (rod) hateth bno (his son), 1 but he that loveth him is diligent in his musar (discipline). 1
25The tzaddik (righteous) eateth to the satisfying of his nefesh (soul), 1 but the beten (stomach) of the resha'im shall want.
