Proverbs 20
1The yayin is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; 1 and whosoever is seduced to be led astray thereby is not wise. 1
2The wrath of a melech is as the roaring of a lion; 1 he who provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own nefesh. 1
3It is kavod for an ish to cease from strife, 1 but any fool can start a quarrel. 1
4The atzel (sluggard, lazy one) will not plow by reason of choref (winter, cold); 1 therefore shall he beg at katzir (harvest), and have nothing. 1
5Etzah (purpose) + 20:5 See Yn 2:24-25 in the lev ish is like deep mayim, 1 but an ish tevunah will draw it out. 1
6Rav adam will proclaim every one his own chesed, 1 but an ish emunim (faithful man, loyal man) who can find one? 1
7The tzaddik walketh in his tohm (integrity, guilelessness); 1 his banim after him are blessed. 1
8A melech that sitteth in the kisse din (throne of judgment) 1 winnows out all rah with his eynayim. 1
9Who can say, I have made my lev pure, 1 I am tahor from my chattat? 1
10Differing weights, and differing measures, 1 both of them are alike to'evah to Hashem. 1
11Even a na'ar (child) is known by his ways, 1 whether his conduct be pure, and whether it be yashar (right). 1
12The hearing ozen, and the seeing ayin, 1 Hashem hath made even both of them. 1
13Love not sheynah (sleep), lest thou come to poverty; 1 open thine eynayim, and thou shalt have enough lechem. 1
14It is good for nothing, it is naught, saith the koneh (buyer), 1 but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth. 1
15There is zahav, and a multitude of rubies, 1 but the sfatayim (lips) of da'as are a precious jewel. 1
16Take his garment that is guaranty for a zar (stranger), 1 and hold it as his pledge for a nokhriyah (foreign woman, strange woman, seductress). 1
17Lechem from sheker (deceit) is sweet to an ish, 1 but afterwards his peh (mouth) shall be filled with gravel. 1
18Every plan is established by etzah, 1 and with tachbulot (guidance) wage milchamah. 1
19He that goeth about as a rakhil (gossip, slanderer, talebearer) revealeth secrets; 1 therefore associate not with the babbler. 1
20He who curseth aviv or immo, 1 his ner (lamp) shall be put out in deep choshech. 1
21A nachalah (inheritance) may be gotten hastily at the rishonah (beginning); 1 but the acharit (latter end) thereof shall not have a bracha. 1
22Say not thou, I will pay back rah; 1 but wait on Hashem, and He shall save thee. 1
23Differing weights are a to'evah unto Hashem, 1 and scales of mirmah (deceit) are not tov. 1
24The steps of a gever are from Hashem; 1 how can an adam then understand his own derech (way, lifeʼs course)? 1
25It is a mokesh adam to devote rashly as kodesh, 1 and after nedarim (vows) to reconsider his consecration. 1
26A melech chacham winnows out the resha'im 1 and bringeth the ofan (threshing wheel) over them. 1
27The neshamah of adam is the ner (light) of Hashem, 1 searching all the innermost beten. 1
28Chesed and emes guard the Melech, 1 and his kisse is upheld by chesed. 1
29The tiferet (glory) of bochurim is their ko'ach (strength), 1 and the hadar (splendor) of zekenim is the silvery head. 1
30Blows that wound cleanseth away rah; 1 so do beatings the innermost beten.
