Proverbs 6
1Beni (my son), if thou put up collateral for thy re'a, 1 if thou hast shaken hands in pledge with a zar (stranger), 1
2Thou art snared with the words of thy peh (mouth), 1 thou art trapped with the words of thy peh (mouth). 1
3Do this now, beni (my son), and deliver thyself, 1 since thou art come into the palm of thy re'a; 1 go, humble thyself, and plead with thy re'a. 1
4Give not sheynah to thine eyes, 1 nor slumber to thine eyelids. 1
5Deliver thyself as a gazelle from the yad, + 6:5 of the hunter 1 and as a tzippor (bird) from the yad of the fowler. 1
6Go to the nemalah (ant), thou atzel (sluggard, lazy one); 1 consider her drakhim (ways), and be chacham (wise); 1
7Which having no katzin (officer, leader) 1 or shoter (policeman) or moshel, 1
8Prepareth her lechem in the kayitz (summer), 1 and gathereth her food in the katzir (harvest). 1
9Ad mosai wilt thou lie down, O atzel (sluggard, lazy one)? 1 When wilt thou arise out of thy sheynah (sleep)? 1
10Yet a little sheynot (sleep ), + 6:10 pl. a little slumber, 1 a little folding of the yadayim to sleep; 1
11So shall thy poverty come as a prowler, 1 and thy need as an ish mogen (man of armor). 1
12A worthless person, a wicked man, 1 walketh with a perverse peh (mouth). 1
13He winketh with his eyes, he shuffleth with his regel, 1 he pointeth with his fingers; 1
14Tahpukhot (perversity) is in his lev, 1 he deviseth rah continually; 1 he stirs up midanim (contention, strife, discord). + 6:14 pl. 1
15Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; 1 suddenly shall he be destroyed without marpeh (remedy). 1
16These shesh (six) things doth Hashem hate; 1 indeed, shevah (seven) are an abomination unto His Nefesh; 1
17Haughty eyes, a lashon sheker, 1 and hands guilty of shefach dahm naki, 1
18A lev that deviseth wicked machshevot (plans), 1 raglayim that are swift in running to ra'ah, 1
19An ed sheker that speaketh lies, 1 and he that soweth midanim (contention, strife, discords) among achim. 1
20Beni (my son), keep the mitzvat Avicha, 1 and forsake not the torat Immecha; 1
21Bind them tamid (continually) upon thine lev, 1 and tie them about thy neck. 1
22When thou goest, it shall guide thee; 1 when thou sleepest, it shall be shomer over thee; 1 and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. 1
23For the mitzvah is a ner (lamp); and torah an ohr; 1 and tokhakhot musar (reproofs of discipline) are the Derech Chayyim (Life Lane); 1
24To be shomer over thee, keeping thee from the eshet rah, 1 from the smooth lashon of the nokhriyah (strange woman). 1
25Lust not after her beauty in thine lev; 1 neither let her allure thee with her eyelids. 1
26For by means of an isha zonah a man is reduced to a kikar lechem; 1 and [another] manʼs wife will prey on the nefesh yekara (precious soul). 1
27Can a man take eish in his kheyk, 1 and his clothes not be burned? 1
28Can one walk upon hot coals, 1 and his regel not be burned? 1
29So is he that goeth into his eshet re'a; 1 whosoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished. 1
30Men do not despise a ganav if he steal 1 to satisfy his nefesh when he is starving; 1
31But if he be found out, he shall restore sevenfold; 1 he shall give hon (substance, wealth) of his bais; 1
32But the no'ef (one who committeth adultery) with an isha lacketh lev; + 6:32 of understanding 1 he that doeth it destroyeth his own nefesh. 1
33A nega + 6:33 See Isa 53:8 for Moshiachʼs nega taken for unfaithful Israel and dishonor shall he get; 1 and his cherpah (reproach) shall not be wiped away. 1
34For kina (jealousy) is the chamat gever (husbandʼs rage); 1 therefore he will not spare in the yom nakam (day of vengeance). 1
35He will not regard kofer (compensation); 1 neither will he be the appeased, though shochad (bribe) be great.
