Proverbs 27

Boast not thyself of to morrow; 1 For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. 1

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; 1 A stranger, and not thine own lips. 1

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; 1 But a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both. 1

Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; 1 But who is able to stand before envy? 1

Open rebuke is better than secret love. 1

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; 1 But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. 1

The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; 1 But to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. 1

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, 1 So is a man that wandereth from his place. 1

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: 1 So doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel. 1

Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; 1 Neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: 1 For better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. 1

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, 1 That I may answer him that reproacheth me. 1

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; 1 But the simple pass on, and are punished. 1

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, 1 And take a pledge of him for a strange woman. 1

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, 1 It shall be counted a curse to him. 1

A continual dropping in a very rainy day 1 And a contentious woman are alike. 1

Whosoever hideth her, hideth the wind, 1 And the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself. 1

Iron sharpeneth iron; 1 So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. 1

Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: 1 So he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured. 1

As in water face answereth to face, 1 So the heart of man to man. 1

Hell and destruction are never full; 1 So the eyes of man are never satisfied. 1

As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; 1 So is a man to his praise. 1

Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, 1 Yet will not his foolishness depart from him. 1

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, 1 And look well to thy herds. 1

For riches are not for ever: 1 And doth the crown endure to every generation? 1

The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, 1 And herbs of the mountains are gathered. 1

The lambs are for thy clothing, 1 And the goats are the price of the field. 1

And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, 1 For the food of thy household, 1 And for the maintenance for thy maidens.
