Proverbs 5
My son, attend unto my wisdom, 1 And bow thine ear to my understanding: 1
That thou mayest regard discretion, 1 And that thy lips may keep knowledge. 1
For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honeycomb, 1 And her mouth is smoother than oil: 1
But her end is bitter as wormwood, 1 Sharp as a twoedged sword. 1
Her feet go down to death; 1 Her steps take hold on hell. 1
Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, 1 Her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. 1
Hear me now therefore, O ye children, 1 And depart not from the words of my mouth. 1
Remove thy way far from her, 1 And come not nigh the door of her house: 1
Lest thou give thine honour unto others, 1 And thy years unto the cruel: 1
Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; 1 And thy labours be in the house of a stranger; 1
And thou mourn at the last, 1 When thy flesh and thy body are consumed, 1
And say, How have I hated instruction, 1 And my heart despised reproof; 1
And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, 1 Nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! 1
I was almost in all evil 1 In the midst of the congregation and assembly. 1
Drink waters out of thine own cistern, 1 And running waters out of thine own well. 1
Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, 1 And rivers of waters in the streets. 1
Let them be only thine own, 1 And not strangers’ with thee. 1
Let thy fountain be blessed: 1 And rejoice with the wife of thy youth. 1
Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; 1 Let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; 1 And be thou ravisht always with her love. 1
And why wilt thou, my son, be ravisht with a strange woman, 1 And embrace the bosom of a stranger? 1
For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, 1 And he pondereth all his goings. 1
His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, 1 And he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. 1
He shall die without instruction; 1 And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
