Job · KJV Cambridge Paragraph

Job 29

Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, 1

O that I were as in months past, 1 As in the days when God preserved me; 1

When his candle shined upon my head, 1 And when by his light I walked through darkness; 1

As I was in the days of my youth, 1 When the secret of God was upon my tabernacle; 1

When the Almighty was yet with me, 1 When my children were about me; 1

When I washed my steps with butter, 1 And the rock poured me out rivers of oil; 1

When I went out to the gate through the city, 1 When I prepared my seat in the street; 1

The young men saw me, and hid themselves: 1 And the aged arose, and stood up. 1

The princes refrained talking, 1 And laid their hand on their mouth. 1

The nobles held their peace, 1 And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. 1

When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; 1 And when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me: 1

Because I delivered the poor that cried, 1 And the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. 1

The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: 1 And I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. 1

I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: 1 My judgment was as a robe and a diadem. 1

I was eyes to the blind, 1 And feet was I to the lame. 1

I was a father to the poor: 1 And the cause which I knew not I searched out. 1

And I brake the jaws of the wicked, 1 And pluckt the spoil out of his teeth. 1

Then I said, I shall die in my nest, 1 And I shall multiply my days as the sand. 1

My root was spread out by the waters, 1 And the dew lay all night upon my branch. 1

My glory was fresh in me, 1 And my bow was renewed in my hand. 1

Unto me men gave ear, and waited, 1 And kept silence at my counsel. 1

After my words they spake not again; 1 And my speech dropped upon them. 1

And they waited for me as for the rain; 1 And they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. 1

If I laughed on them, they believed it not; 1 And the light of my countenance they cast not down. 1

I chose out their way, and sat chief, 1 And dwelt as a king in the army, 1 As one that comforteth the mourners.
