Job 9

Then Job answered and said, 1

I know it is so of a truth: 1 But how should man be just with God? 1

If he will contend with him, 1 He cannot answer him one of a thousand. 1

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: 1 Who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered? 1

Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: 1 Which overturneth them in his anger. 1

Which shaketh the earth out of her place, 1 And the pillars thereof tremble. 1

Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; 1 And sealeth up the stars. 1

Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, 1 And treadeth upon the waves of the sea. 1

Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, 1 And Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. 1

Which doeth great things past finding out; 1 Yea, and wonders without number. 1

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: 1 He passeth on also, but I perceive him not. 1

Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? 1 Who will say unto him, What doest thou? 1

If God will not withdraw his anger, 1 The proud helpers do stoop under him. 1

How much less shall I answer him, 1 And choose out my words to reason with him? 1

Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, 1 But I would make supplication to my judge. 1

If I had called, and he had answered me; 1 Yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice. 1

For he breaketh me with a tempest, 1 And multiplieth my wounds without cause. 1

He will not suffer me to take my breath, 1 But filleth me with bitterness. 1

If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: 1 And if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead? 1

If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: 1 If I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. 1

Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: 1 I would despise my life. 1

This is one thing, therefore I said it, 1 He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked. 1

If the scourge slay suddenly, 1 He will laugh at the trial of the innocent. 1

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: 1 He covereth the faces of the judges thereof; 1 If not, where, and who is he? 1

Now my days are swifter than a post: 1 They flee away, they see no good. 1

They are passed away as the swift ships: 1 As the eagle that hasteth to the prey. 1

If I say, I will forget my complaint, 1 I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself: 1

I am afraid of all my sorrows, 1 I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent. 1

If I be wicked, 1 Why then labour I in vain? 1

If I wash myself with snow water, 1 And make my hands never so clean; 1

Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, 1 And mine own clothes shall abhor me. 1

For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, 1 And we should come together in judgment. 1

Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, 1 That might lay his hand upon us both. 1

Let him take his rod away from me, 1 And let not his fear terrify me: 1

Then would I speak, and not fear him; 1 But it is not so with me.
