Job 3

And Iyov spoke, and said, 1

Let the yom perish 1 wherein I was born, 1 and halailah in which it was said, 1 There is a gever born. 1

Let that yom be choshech; 1 let not Elohim regard it from above, 1 neither let the light shine upon it. 1

Let choshech and the tzalmavet (shadow of death) claim it; 1 let an anan dwell upon it; 1 let the blackness of the yom terrify it. 1

As for that lailah, 1 let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the yamim of the shanah, 1 let it not come into the number of the months. 1

Hinei, let that lailah be barren; 1 let no joyful shout come therein. 1

Let them curse it that curse the yom, 1 who are ready to rouse Leviathan. 1

Let the kokhavim of the dawn thereof be dark; 1 let it look for ohr, but have none; 1 neither let it see the dawning of the shachar, 1

Because it shut not up the dalatot of my motherʼs womb, 1 nor hid amal (tzoros) from mine eyes. 1

Why did I not come to mot at birth? 1 Why did I not perish when I came out of the beten (belly, womb)? 1

Madua (why) were there birkayim to receive me? 1 Or why the shadayim that from them I should nurse? 1

For atah (now) I would be lying still and quiet, 1 have slept and been at rest, 1

With melachim and yo'atzim of ha'aretz, 1 which build ruins for themselves; 1

Or with sarim (princes) that had zahav, 1 who filled their batim (houses) with kesef; 1

Or as a hidden stillborn — I had not been! 1 — as olelim which never saw ohr. 1

There the resha'im cease from troubling; 1 and there the weary are at rest. 1

There the asirim (prisoners, captives) rest together; 1 they hear not the voice of the oppressor. 1

The katon and gadol are there; 1 and the eved is free from his adon. 1

Why is ohr given to him that is in misery, 1 and chayyim unto the bitter in nefesh; 1

Which long for mavet, but it cometh not; 1 and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; 1

Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, 1 when they can find the kever? 1

Why is ohr given to a gever whose derech is hidden, 1 and whom Elohim hath hedged in? 1

For my sighing cometh instead of lechem, 1 and my groanings are poured out like the mayim. 1

For the pachad (terror) which I greatly feared is come upon me, 1 and that which I dreaded is come unto me. 1

I was not in safety, neither had I rest, 1 neither was I quiet; 1 and rogez (tzoros, turmoil) came.
