Isaiah 40
1Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. 1
2Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, 1 That her warfare is accomplished, 1 That her iniquity is pardoned: 1 For she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. 1
3The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, 1 Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 1
4Every valley shall be exalted, 1 And every mountain and hill shall be made low: 1 And the crooked shall be made straight, 1 And the rough places plain: 1
5And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, 1 And all flesh shall see it together: 1 For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. 1
6The voice said, Cry. 1 And he said, What shall I cry? 1 All flesh is grass, 1 And all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 1
7The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: 1 Because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: 1 Surely the people is grass. 1
8The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: 1 But the word of our God shall stand for ever. 1
9O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; 1 O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; 1 Lift it up, be not afraid; 1 Say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God. 1
10Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, 1 And his arm shall rule for him: 1 Behold, his reward is with him, 1 And his work before him. 1
11He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: 1 He shall gather the lambs with his arm, 1 And carry them in his bosom, 1 And shall gently lead those that are with young. 1
12Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, 1 And meted out heaven with the span, 1 And comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, 1 And weighed the mountains in scales, 1 And the hills in a balance? 1
13Who hath directed the spirit of the Lord, 1 Or being his counseller hath taught him? 1
14With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, 1 And taught him in the path of judgment, 1 And taught him knowledge, 1 And shewed to him the way of understanding? 1
15Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, 1 And are counted as the small dust of the balance: 1 Behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. 1
16And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, 1 Nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering. 1
17All nations before him are as nothing; 1 And they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. 1
18To whom then will ye liken God? 1 Or what likeness will ye compare unto him? 1
19The workman melteth a graven image, 1 And the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, 1 And casteth silver chains. 1
20He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; 1 He seeketh unto him a cunning workman 1 To prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved. 1
21Have ye not known? have ye not heard? 1 Hath it not been told you from the beginning? 1 Have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? 1
22It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, 1 And the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; 1 That stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, 1 And spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: 1
23That bringeth the princes to nothing; 1 He maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. 1
24Yea, they shall not be planted; 1 Yea, they shall not be sown: 1 Yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: 1 And he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, 1 And the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble. 1
25To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. 1
26Lift up your eyes on high, 1 And behold who hath created these things, 1 That bringeth out their host by number: 1 He calleth them all by names 1 By the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; 1 Not one faileth. 1
27Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, 1 My way is hid from the Lord, 1 And my judgment is passed over from my God? 1
28Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, 1 That the everlasting God, the Lord, 1 The Creator of the ends of the earth, 1 Fainteth not, neither is weary? 1 There is no searching of his understanding. 1
29He giveth power to the faint; 1 And to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 1
30Even the youths shall faint and be weary, 1 And the young men shall utterly fall: 1
31But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; 1 They shall mount up with wings as eagles; 1 They shall run, and not be weary; 1 And they shall walk, and not faint.
