Isaiah 1
1The chazon (vision) of Yeshayah ben Amotz, which he saw concerning Yehudah and Yerushalayim in the yamim of Uziyahu, Yotam, Achaz, and Yechizkiyahu, melachim of Yehudah. 1
2Hear, O Shomayim, and give ear, O Eretz, 1 for Hashem hath spoken; 1 I have nourished and brought up banim, 1 and they have rebelled against Me. + 1:2 i.e., willfully flouted My authority. See Isa 53:5,8 1
3The ox knoweth his owner, 1 and the donkey his masterʼs evus; 1 but Yisroel doth not know, 1 My people doth not consider. 1
4Ah, goy choteh (sinful nation), 1 a people weighed down with avon (guilt, iniquity), 1 zera of evildoers, banim of corruption; 1 they forsook Hashem, 1 they have spurned the Kadosh Yisroel (the Holy One of Yisroel), 1 they have turned their back on Him. + 1:4 T.N. Here we see it is “My people” ( Ex 6:6-7 ) who are stricken, whereas in Isa 53:8 it is Moshiach Ben Dovid who is stricken for My people. 1
5Why, seeing that ye will be stricken again, 1 will ye rebel stubbornly again? 1 The kol rosh is sick, 1 and the kol levav faint. 1
6From the sole of the regel even unto the rosh 1 there is no soundness in it; 1 but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores; 1 they have not been closed, 1 neither bound up, neither soothed with shemen. 1
7Your country is desolate, 1 your cities are burned with eish; 1 your land, zarim devour it in your presence, 1 and it is desolate, as overthrown by zarim. 1
8And the Bat Tziyon (i.e., Yerushalayim) is left 1 as a sukkah in a kerem (vineyard), 1 as a shack in a cucumber field, 1 as an ir (city) under siege. 1
9Except Hashem Tzva'os 1 had left unto us a very small remnant, 1 we should have been as Sodom, 1 and we should have been like unto Amora (Gomorrah). 1
10Hear the Devar Hashem, 1 ye rulers of Sodom; 1 give ear unto the Torat Eloheinu, 1 ye people of Amora (Gomorrah). 1
11To what purpose is the multitude 1 of your zevakhim unto Me? saith Hashem; 1 I am fed up of the olot (burnt offerings) of rams, 1 and the fat of fed beasts; 1 and I delight not in the dahm of bulls, 1 or of lambs, or of goats. 1
12When ye come to appear before Me, 1 who hath required this at your hand, to trample khatzerai (My courts)? 1
13Bring no more futile minchot; 1 ketoret is an abomination unto Me; 1 Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) and Shabbos, the calling of assemblies — 1 I cannot endure aven (wickedness) and atzarah (solemn convocation). 1
14Your Rosh Chodesh and your Mo'adim 1 My Nefesh hateth; 1 they are a burden unto Me; 1 I am weary to bear them. 1
15And when ye spread forth your hands, 1 I will hide Mine eyes from you; 1 yea, when ye make many tefillah, 1 I will not hear; 1 your hands are full of damim. 1
16Wash you, make you clean; 1 put away the evil of your doings 1 from before Mine eyes; 1 cease to do evil; 1
17Learn to do good; 1 seek mishpat, 1 relieve the oppressed, 1 judge the fatherless, 1 plead for the almanah. 1
18Come now, and let us reason together, 1 saith Hashem; 1 though your sins be as scarlet, 1 they shall be as white as snow; 1 though they be red like crimson, 1 they shall be as wool. 1
19If ye be willing and obedient, 1 ye shall eat the good of ha'aretz; 1
20But if ye refuse and rebel, 1 ye shall be devoured with the cherev; 1 for the mouth of Hashem hath spoken. 1
21How is the Kiryah Ne'emanah (Faithful City, i.e., Yerushalayim) become a zonah (harlot)! 1 It was full of mishpat; 1 tzedek lodged in it; 1 but now murderers. 1
22Thy kesef is become dross, 1 thy wine mixed with mayim: 1
23Thy sarim (princes) are rebellious, 1 and companions of ganavim: 1 every one loveth bribes, 1 and followeth after rewards: 1 they give no justice to the fatherless, 1 neither doth the cause of the almanah come unto them. 1
24Therefore saith HaAdon, 1 Hashem Tzva'os, Avir Yisroel (the Mighty One of Yisroel), 1 Ah, I will relieve Myself of Mine adversaries, 1 and avenge Me of Mine enemies: 1
25And I will turn My hand upon thee, 1 and refine away thy impurities, 1 and take away all thy alloy: 1
26And I will restore thy shofetim as at the first, 1 and thy counselors as at the beginning: 1 afterward thou shalt be called, 1 The Ir HaTzedek, the Kiryah Ne'emanah. 1
27Tziyon shall be redeemed with mishpat, 1 and those in her who make teshuvah with tzedakah. 1
28And the destruction of the poshe'im and of the chote'im shall be together, 1 and they that forsake Hashem shall be consumed. 1
29For they shall be ashamed 1 of the sacred oaks which ye have delighted in, 1 and ye shall blush 1 for the gannot (gardens) that ye have chosen. 1
30For ye shall be as an oak 1 whose leaf fadeth, 1 and as a garden 1 that hath no mayim. + 1:30 T.N. The unquenchable fire of the apostate in the first chapter points to the unquenchable fire of Gehinnom in the last verse of the last chapter ( 66:24 ) and the loathesomeness of those there — Dan 12:2 1
31And the strong shall be as tinder, 1 and the maker of it + 1:31 the idol as a spark, 1 and they shall both burn together, 1 and none shall quench them.
