Isaiah 47
1Go down, and sit in the aphar, 1 O Betulat Bat Bavel, 1 sit on the ground; there is no kisse, 1 O Bat Kasdim (Chaldeans); 1 for thou shalt no more be called 1 tender and delicate. 1
2Take the millstones, and grind meal; 1 uncover thy tzammah (hair, tresses), lift up thy shohvel (train, skirt), 1 bare the thigh, pass over the neharot. 1
3Thy ervat (nakedness) shall be exposed, 1 yes, thy cherpah (shame, reproach) shall be seen; 1 I will take nakam (vengeance) 1 and I will not be as adam when I meet thee. 1
4Go'aleinu, Hashem Tzva'os Shmo, 1 Kadosh Yisroel. 1
5Sit thou silent, and get thee into choshech, 1 O Bat Kasdim (Chaldeans); 1 for thou shalt no more be called, 1 Geveret Mamlachot (The Lady of Kingdoms). 1
6I was angry with My people, 1 I have profaned Mine nachalah, 1 and given them into thine yad; 1 thou didst show them no rachamim (mercy); 1 upon the zaken (ancient, old) hast thou very heavily laid thy ol (yoke). 1
7And thou saidst: 1 I shall be a Geveret ad l'olam (Lady forever): 1 so that thou didst not lay these things to thy lev, 1 neither didst remember her + 47:7 Babylonʼs acharit (latter end, i.e. future destruction). 1
8Therefore hear now this, O adinah (voluptuous, wanton one) 1 that dwellest lavetach (carelessly, in security), 1 that sayest in her lev: 1 I am, and none else besides me; 1 I shall not live as an almanah, 1 neither shall I know shechol (the loss of children, bereavement); 1
9But these two things shall overtake thee 1 in a rega (moment), in yom echad, 1 shechol (the loss of children), and almon (widowhood); 1 they shall come upon thee in their perfection 1 for the multitude of thy kashefanut (sorceries, witchcraft) 1 and for the otzmah (great abundance) of thine khavarim (spells, magic, enchantments). 1
10For thou hast trusted in thy ra'ah (wickedness); 1 thou hast said: None seeth me. 1 Thy chochmah and thy da'as, 1 it hath perverted thee; 1 and thou hast said in thine lev: 1 I am, and none else beside me. 1
11Therefore shall ra'ah come upon thee; 1 thou shalt not know its shachar (dawn, from whence it riseth); 1 and tragedy will befall thee; 1 thou shalt not be able to make kofer (ransom) to ward it off; 1 and sho'ah (catastrophe) shall come upon thee pitom (suddenly), 1 which thou shalt not foresee or know. 1
12Stand now with thine khavarim (spells, magic, enchantments), 1 and with the multitude of thy kashefanut (sorceries, witchcraft) 1 wherein thou hast toiled from thy neurim; 1 perhaps thou shalt be able to succeed, 1 perhaps thou mayest cause terror. 1
13Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy etzot (counsels). 1 Let now stand up the hovrev Shomayim (the dissectors of the heavens, astrologers), 1 the chozim bakochavim (stargazers), 1 the ones that predict the future by Rosh Chodesh, 1 and save thee from these things 1 that shall come upon thee. 1
14Hinei, they shall be as kash (stubble, straw); 1 the eish shall burn them; 1 they shall not save their nefesh 1 from the power of the flame; 1 there shall not be a hot coal to warm them, 1 nor eish to sit before. 1
15Thus unto thee are they with whom thou hast toiled, 1 who have been thy socharim (traffickers, i.e., religious practitioners) from thy neurim (youth); 1 they shall wander about in their random exits; 1 none shall act as Moshi'a to thee.
