Isaiah 48
1Hear ye this, O Bais Ya'akov, 1 which are called b'shem Yisroel, 1 and are come forth out of the waters of Yehudah, 1 which take oaths b'Shem Hashem, 1 and invoke Elohei Yisroel, 1 but not in emes, nor in tzedakah. 1
2For they call themselves of the Ir HaKodesh, 1 and lean themselves upon Elohei Yisroel; 1 Hashem Tzva'os Shmo. 1
3I have declared the rishonot (former things) from long ago; 1 and they went forth out of My mouth, 1 and I made them known; 1 I acted pitom (suddenly), and they came to pass. 1
4Because I knew that thou art kesheh (obstinate, stubborn) 1 and thy oref (neck) is sinew of barzel (iron), 1 and thy metzach (brow, forehead) bronze; 1
5I have even from long ago preached it to thee; 1 before it came to pass I caused thee to hear it; 1 lest thou shouldest say: Mine atzav (idol) hath done them, 1 and my pesel, and my nesech (molten idol, metal image) hath commanded them. 1
6Thou hast heard, 1 look at all this; and will not ye preach it? 1 I have caused thee to hear chadashot (new things) from this time, 1 even netzurot (hidden things) and thou didst not know them. 1
7Now they are created, and not from long ago; 1 before today thou heardest them not; 1 lest thou shouldest say, Hinei, I knew them. 1
8Thou heardest not; thou had no da'as; 1 from of old, thine ozen (ear) was not opened; 1 for I knew that thou wouldest deal as a boged (treacherous betrayer), 1 and thou wast called a poshei'a (rebel, transgressor) from the beten + 48:8 i.e., birth; see Ps 51:5 (womb). 1
9Lema'an Shmi (for the sake of My Name) will I defer Mine anger, 1 and for My tehillah (praise) will I refrain for thee, 1 that I cut thee not off. 1
10Hinei, I have refined thee, but not as kesef; 1 I have chosen thee in the furnace of oni (affliction). 1
11For Mine own sake, even for Mine own sake will I do it; 1 for how can I allow Chillul Hashem? 1 And I will not give My kavod unto another. 1
12Pay heed unto Me, 1 O Ya'akov and Yisroel, My called; 1 I am He; I am Rishon, 1 I also am Acharon. 1
13Mine Yad also hath laid the foundation of Eretz, 1 and My yamin hath measured Shomayim; 1 when I call them, 1 they stand up together. 1
14All ye, assemble yourselves, and listen. 1 Which among them + 48:14 the pesilim, idols hath declared these things? 1 Hashem hath loved him, + 48:14 i.e., Cyrus he will do His chafetz (pleasure, will) on Babylon, 1 and His zero'a shall be on the Kasdim (Chaldeans). 1
15I, even I, have spoken; indeed, I have called him; + 48:15 i.e., Cyrus 1 I have brought him, and He shall make his derech successful. 1
16Come ye near unto Me, hear ye this; 1 I have not spoken baseter (in secret) merosh (from the first); 1 from the time that it takes place, there am I; 1 and now Adonoi Hashem, and His Ruach, + 48:16 Hakodesh hath sent Me. + 48:16 Moshiach, the Eved Hashem; see Isa 42:1; see Hashem ʼs Kedushah HaMeshulleshet here 1
17Thus saith Hashem thy Go'el, 1 the Kadosh Yisroel; 1 I am Hashem Eloheicha thy Melamed (Teacher) of doing that which profiteth, 1 thy Madrikh (Guide, Instructor) in the Derech that thou shouldest go. 1
18O if only thou hadst paid heed to My mitzvot! 1 Then had thy shalom been like a nahar, 1 and thy tzedakah as the waves of the yam; 1
19Thy zera also had been like the chol (sand), 1 and those that come out of thy loins like me'otav (sands of the sea thereof); 1 his shem should not have been cut off 1 nor destroyed from before Me. 1
20Go ye forth of Babylon, 1 flee ye from the Kasdim (Chaldeans), 1 with a voice of joyful singing 1 declare ye, preach this, 1 send it forth even to the ketzeh ha'aretz; 1 say ye: Hashem hath redeemed His Eved Ya'akov. 1
21And they thirsted not 1 when He led them through the deserts; 1 He caused the mayim to flow out of the Tzur for them; 1 He split the Tzur, 1 and the mayim gushed out. 1
22There is no shalom, saith Hashem, 1 unto the resha'im.
