Isaiah 5
Now will I sing of my beloved 1 a shirat dodi touching His kerem (vineyard). 1 My beloved had a kerem (vineyard) 1 in a very fruitful hill; 1
And He dug it up, and gathered out the stones thereof, 1 and planted it with the choicest vine, 1 and built a migdal in the midst of it, 1 and also made a yekev (winepress) therein; 1 and He looked that it should bring forth anavim (grapes), 1 and it brought forth b'ushim (wild grapes). 1
And now, O inhabitants of Yerushalayim, 1 and Ish Yehudah, 1 judge, now, between Me and My kerem (vineyard). 1
What could have been done more to My kerem (vineyard), 1 that I have not done in it? Why, 1 when I looked that it should bring forth anavim, 1 brought it forth b'ushim? 1
And now then; 1 I will tell you now what I will do to my kerem (vineyard): 1 I will take away the hedge thereof, 1 and it shall be grazed upon; 1 and break down the wall thereof, 1 and it shall be trampled down; 1
And I will lay it waste; 1 it shall not be pruned, 1 nor cultivated; 1 but there shall come up briers and thorns; 1 I will also command the clouds that they rain no matar (rain) upon it. 1
For the Kerem Hashem Tzva'os 1 is Bais Yisroel, 1 and the Ish Yehudah 1 are the planting of His delight; 1 and He looked for mishpat (justice), 1 but, hinei, mishpach (bloodshed, rapaciousness); 1 for tzedakah, but, hinei, tze'akah (cry of distress). 1
Hoy unto them that add bais to bais, 1 that join sadeh to sadeh, till there be no makom (place, home), 1 that ye alone are dwelling in the midst of ha'aretz! 1
Hashem Tzva'os said in my ozen, 1 Batim rabbim shall be in ruins, 1 gedolim and tovim, with no one to live in them. 1
Yea, ten yokes of kerem (vineyard) shall yield 10 gallons, 1 and the homer (six bushels) of zera (seed) shall yield an ephah (three-fifths bushel). 1
Hoy unto them that rise up early in the boker, 1 that they may chase after shechar (strong drink); that continue until night, 1 till yayin inflame them! 1
And the kinnor, and the nevel, the tambourine, and flute, 1 and yayin, are in their mishtehim; 1 but they regard not the Po'al Hashem (the work of Hashem ), 1 neither consider the ma'aseh of His hands. 1
Therefore my people + 5:13 See Isa 53:8 are gone into the Golus, 1 because they have no da'as; 1 and their men of rank are starved, 1 and their multitude parched with thirst. 1
Therefore Sheol hath enlarged herself, 1 and opened her mouth without chok (limit); 1 and their nobility, and their masses, 1 and their throngs, and the reveler, 1 shall descend into it. 1
And adam shall be abased, 1 and the ish shall be brought low, 1 and the eyes of the haughty shall be humbled; 1
But Hashem Tzva'os shall be exalted in mishpat, 1 and HaEl HaKadosh shall show Himself Kadosh in tzedakah. 1
Then shall the kevasim feed as upon their pasture, 1 and the gerim (sojourners) will eat in the ruins of the rich. 1
Hoy unto them that draw avon (guilt) with cords of deceit, 1 and tug at chatta'ah (sin) as with a cart rope; 1
That say, Let Him make speed, and hasten His Ma'aseh, 1 that we may see it; 1 and let the Atzat Kadosh Yisroel (purpose of the Holy One of Israel) draw near and come, 1 that we may know it! 1
Hoy unto them that call rah tov, 1 and tov rah; 1 that put choshech for ohr, 1 and ohr for choshech; 1 that put mar for matok, 1 and matok for mar! 1
Hoy unto them that are chachamim in their own eyes, 1 and clever in their own sight! 1
Hoy unto them that are Gibborim to drink yayin, 1 and anshei chayil to mix shechar; 1
Which justify the rasha for shochad (bribe), 1 and take away the tzidkat tzaddikim from him! 1
Therefore as the eish licketh up the stubble, 1 and the flame consumeth the dry grass, 1 so their shoresh shall be as rottenness, 1 and their blossom shall go up as dust; 1 because they have cast away the Torat Hashem Tzva'os, 1 and spurned the word of the Kadosh Yisroel. 1
Therefore is the Af Hashem kindled against His people, 1 and He hath stretched forth His yad against them, 1 and hath struck them down; and the mountains did tremble, 1 and their nevilah were like refuse in the streets. 1 For all this His anger is not turned away, 1 but His yad is stretched out still. 1
And He will lift up a banner to the distant Goyim, 1 and will whistle for him at the ketzeh ha'aretz; hinei, 1 they shall come with speed swiftly; 1
None shall be weary nor stumble among them; 1 none shall slumber nor sleep; 1 neither shall the ezor of their loins be loosed, 1 nor the thong of their sandals be broken; 1
Whose khitzim (arrows) are sharp, 1 and all their bows bent, 1 the hoofs of their susim shall seem like flint, 1 and their wheels like a whirlwind: 1
Their roaring shall be like a lion, 1 they shall roar like young lions; 1 yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the teref, 1 and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it. 1
And in Yom Hahu they shall roar against them 1 like the roaring of the sea; 1 and if one look unto ha'aretz, 1 hinei, choshech and tzar (distress), 1 and the ohr groweth dark with clouds.
