Isaiah 58
1Cry aloud, restrain not, 1 lift up thy kol (voice) like the shofar, 1 and preach to My people their peysha (transgression, rebellion) 1 and Bais Ya'akov their chattot. 1
2Yet they seek Me yom yom (daily), 1 and for the da'as of My Drakhim they seem eager, 1 like a Goy (Nation) that doeth tzedakah, 1 like one that did not forsake mishpat Elohav; 1 they ask of Me the mishpetei-tzedek; 1 they seem eager for kirvat Elohim (getting close to G-d, revival). 1
3Why have we done a tzom, say they, and Thou seest not? 1 Why have we afflicted nafsheinu, and Thou takest no notice? 1 See, in your yom tzom ye find chefetz (pleasure, personal advantage) 1 and exploit all your toilers. 1
4See, ye undergo a tzom for grievance and strife, 1 and to strike with the fist of resha; 1 ye shall not do a tzom as ye do today, 1 to make your voice to be heard on marom. 1
5Is such as this a tzom that I have chosen? 1 Merely for adam to afflict his nefesh? 1 To bow down his rosh like a bulrush, 1 and to spread sackcloth and efer (ashes) under him? 1 Wilt thou call this a tzom, 1 and a yom ratzon (a day of acceptance, an acceptable day) unto Hashem? 1
6Is not this the tzom that I have chosen? 1 To loose the chartzubbot resha (chains of wickedness, injustice), 1 to undo the aguddot motah (bindings of the yoke bar), 1 and to let the retzutzim (oppressed ones) go as chafeshim (free ones), 1 and that ye break kol motah (every yoke of oppression)? 1
7Is it not paras lechem (breaking bread of thine, i.e., serving food) to the hungry, 1 and that thou bring the homeless aniyyim (poor) to thy bais? 1 When thou seest the arom (naked), that thou cover him with clothing; 1 and that thou hide not thyself from thine own basar (flesh and blood, kinspeople)? 1
8Then shall thy light break forth like the shachar (dawn), 1 and thine healing titzmach (shall spring forth; Tzemach) speedily; 1 and thy tzedek shall go before thee; 1 the kavod Hashem shall be thy rearguard. 1
9Then shalt thou call, and Hashem shall answer; 1 thou shalt cry for help, and He shall say: Hineni! 1 If thou remove from the midst of thee the motah (yoke), 1 the pointing of the etzba (finger [of contempt]) and speaking aven (evil, lashon hora); 1
10And if thou draw out thy nefesh to the hungry, 1 and satisfy the nefesh of the afflicted, 1 then shall thy ohr rise in choshech, 1 and thy darkness shall be as the noon; 1
11And Hashem shall guide thee tamid, 1 and satisfy thy nefesh in drought, 1 and strengthen thy atzmot; 1 and thou shalt be like a gan raveh (well-watered garden), 1 and like a motzah mayim (spring of water), 1 whose mayim fail not. 1
12And they that shall be of thee shall rebuild the charevot olam (ancient ruins); 1 thou shalt raise up the mosedei dor vador (the foundations of many generations); 1 and thou shalt be called, Goder Peretz (Repairer of the Breach); 1 Meshovev Netivot Lashevet (Restorer of the Streets For Habitation). 1
13If thou turn away thy regel on account of Shabbos, 1 from doing thy chefetz on My Yom Kodesh; 1 and call Shabbos an Oneg (Delight), 1 the Kedosh Hashem (Holy Day of Hashem ), “honored”; 1 and if thou shalt honor it, not doing thine darkhim 1 nor finding thine own chefetz, nor speaking [worldly] words: 1
14Then shalt thou delight in Hashem; 1 and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of eretz, 1 and feed thee with the nachalat Ya'akov Avicha; 1 for the mouth of Hashem hath spoken.
