Isaiah 29
Hoy (woe, doom) to Ariel, + 29:1 i.e., Yerushalayim to Ariel, the city where Dovid dwelt! 1 Add ye shanah to shanah; 1 let chaggim (feasts) cycle around. 1
Yet I will distress Ariel, 1 and there shall be heaviness and sorrow; 1 and it shall be unto me as ariel (altar hearth). + 29:2 See Ezek 43:15 1
And I will besiege thee all around, 1 and will lay siege against thee with towers, 1 and I will raise metzurot (siegeworks) against thee. 1
And thou shalt be brought low, and shalt speak me'eretz (out of the ground), 1 and thy speech shall whisper out of the aphar, 1 and thy voice shall be, like an ov (mediumʼs that has a familiar spirit), out of the ground, 1 and thy speech shall whisper out of the aphar. 1
Moreover the multitude of thy foes shall be like fine dust, 1 and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as motz (chaff) that in passing bloweth away; indeed, 1 it shall be at an instant suddenly. 1
Thou shalt be visited [in punishment] by Hashem Tzva'os 1 with ra'am (thunder), and with earthquake, and a kol gadol, 1 with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring eish. 1
And the multitude of kol HaGoyim 1 that fight against Ariel, 1 even all that fight against her 1 and her metzadah, and that besiege her, 1 shall be as a chalom (dream) 1 of a chazon lailah (night vision). 1
It shall even be 1 as when a hungry man hath a chalom, and, hinei, he eateth; 1 but he awaketh, and his nefesh is empty; 1 or as when a thirsty man hath a chalom, and, hinei, he drinketh; 1 but he awaketh, and, hinei, he is faint, 1 and his nefesh still thirsts; 1 so shall the multitude of kol HaGoyim be, 1 that fight against Har Tziyon. 1
Pause, and wonder? 1 Blind yourselves and be blind! 1 They are drunken, but not with yayin; 1 they stagger, but not with strong drink. 1
For Hashem hath poured out upon you 1 the ruach tardemah (spirit of deep sleep), 1 and hath closed your eynayim; namely, that of the nevi'im 1 and your heads, you seers, hath He covered.
And the whole vision is become unto you as the devarim of a sefer that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, now; and he saith, I am not able; for it is sealed;
And the sefer is delivered to him that with the sefer has no da'as, saying, Read this, now; and he saith, I cannot read this. With sefer I have no da'as. 1
Therefore Adonoi says, 1 Forasmuch as this people draw near Me with their peh, 1 and with their sfatayim do honor Me, 1 but have removed their lev far from Me, 1 and their fear toward Me 1 is mitzvat anashim melummadah (human commandments taught by rote); 1
Therefore, hineni, I will again do an astonishing work among this people, 1 even a marvellous work and a peleh (wonder); 1 for the chochmah of their chachamim shall perish, 1 and the binah (understanding) of their sages shall vanish. 1
Hoy (woe, doom) unto them that go to great depths to hide their etzah (plan) from Hashem, 1 and their ma'asim are in the dark, 1 and they say, Who seeth us? 1 And who knoweth us? 1
Surely you have things turned around. 1 Shall the Yotzer be esteemed as equal with the khomer (clay); 1 for shall the ma'aseh say of him that made it, 1 He made me not? 1 Or shall the thing formed say of Him that formed it, 1 He had no understanding? 1
Is it not yet a very little while, 1 and Levanon shall be turned into a carmel, 1 and the carmel shall be esteemed as a ya'ar (forest)? 1
And in that day shall the chereshim (deaf persons) 1 hear the devarim of the sefer, 1 and the eynayim of the ivrim 1 shall see out of obscurity, and out of choshech. 1
The anaviyim also shall increase their simchah in Hashem, 1 and the evyonei adam (needy of humankind) s 1 hall rejoice in the Kadosh Yisroel. 1
For the terrifying one is brought to naught, 1 and the scoffer is consumed, 1 and all that strive for avon are cut off; 1
That make an adam an offender with a devar, 1 and lay a snare for the mokhiach (reprover, defender) in the sha'ar (gate, court), 1 and turn aside the tzaddik from justice.
Therefore thus saith Hashem, who redeemed Avraham, concerning Bais Ya'akov: 1 Ya'akov shall not now be ashamed, 1 neither shall his face now grow fearfully pale. 1
But when he seeth his banim, 1 the ma'aseh of Mine hands, in his midst, 1 they shall set apart as kodesh Shmi (My Name), 1 and set apart as kodesh the Kadosh Ya'akov, 1 and shall fear the Elohei Yisroel. 1
They also that erred in ruach shall know binah (understanding), 1 and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.
