Psalms 44
We have heard with our ears, O God, 1 Our fathers have told us, 1 What work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. 1
How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; 1 How thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. 1
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, 1 Neither did their own arm save them: 1 But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, 1 Because thou hadst a favour unto them. 1
Thou art my King, O God: 1 Command deliverances for Jacob. 1
Through thee will we push down our enemies: 1 Through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. 1
For I will not trust in my bow, 1 Neither shall my sword save me. 1
But thou hast saved us from our enemies, 1 And hast put them to shame that hated us. 1
In God we boast all the day long, 1 And praise thy name for ever. Selah. 1
But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; 1 And goest not forth with our armies. 1
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: 1 And they which hate us spoil for themselves. 1
Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; 1 And hast scattered us among the heathen. 1
Thou sellest thy people for nought, 1 And dost not increase thy wealth by their price. 1
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, 1 A scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. 1
Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, 1 A shaking of the head among the people. 1
My confusion is continually before me, 1 And the shame of my face hath covered me, 1
For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; 1 By reason of the enemy and avenger. 1
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, 1 Neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. 1
Our heart is not turned back, 1 Neither have our steps declined from thy way; 1
Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, 1 And covered us with the shadow of death. 1
If we have forgotten the name of our God, 1 Or stretched out our hands to a strange god; 1
Shall not God search this out? 1 For he knoweth the secrets of the heart. 1
Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; 1 We are counted as sheep for the slaughter. 1
Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? 1 Arise, cast us not off for ever. 1
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, 1 And forgettest our affliction and our oppression? 1
For our soul is bowed down to the dust: 1 Our belly cleaveth unto the earth. 1
Arise for our help, 1 And redeem us for thy mercy’s sake.
