Psalms 49
Hear this, all ye people; 1 Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world: 1
Both low and high, 1 Rich and poor, together. 1
My mouth shall speak of wisdom; 1 And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. 1
I will incline mine ear to a parable: 1 I will open my dark saying upon the harp. 1
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, 1 When the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about? 1
They that trust in their wealth, 1 And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; 1
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, 1 Nor give to God a ransom for him: 1
(For the redemption of their soul is precious, 1 And it ceaseth for ever:) 1
That he should still live for ever, 1 And not see corruption. 1
For he seeth that wise men die, 1 Likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, 1 And leave their wealth to others. 1
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, 1 And their dwelling places to all generations; 1 They call their lands after their own names. 1
Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: 1 He is like the beasts that perish. 1
This their way is their folly: 1 Yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah. 1
Like sheep they are laid in the grave; 1 Death shall feed on them; 1 And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; 1 And their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling. 1
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: 1 For he shall receive me. Selah. 1
Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, 1 When the glory of his house is increased; 1
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: 1 His glory shall not descend after him. 1
Though whiles he lived he blessed his soul: 1 And men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. 1
He shall go to the generation of his fathers; 1 They shall never see light. 1
Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, 1 Is like the beasts that perish.
