Psalms 31

(For the one directing. Mizmor Dovid) 1

In Thee, Hashem, do I take refuge; 1 let me never be put to shame; 1 deliver me in Thy tzedakah. 1

Incline Thine ear to me; 1 deliver me speedily; 1 be Thou for me a Tzur Ma'oz, 1 a Bais Metzudot (fortress) to save me. 1

For Thou art my Sela (rock) and my Metzudah (fortress); 1 therefore for the sake of Thy Name, lead me, and guide me. 1

Pull me out of the reshet (trap, net) 1 that they have laid for me; 1 for Thou art my ma'oz (stronghold). 1

Into Thine yad I commit my ruach; 1 Thou hast redeemed me, Hashem El Emes. + 31:6 Lk 23:46; Ac 7:59 1

I hate them that are the shomrim of lying vanities; + 31:7 i.e., idols 1 but I trust in Hashem. 1

I will be glad and rejoice in Thy chesed; 1 for Thou hast seen my affliction; 1 Thou hast known the tzoros (troubles) of my nefesh; 1

And hast not shut me up into the yad of the oyev (enemy); 1 Thou hast set my feet in a merkhav 1 (large place, spacious or broad place). 1

Channeni, Hashem, for I am in tzoros; 1 mine eye is consumed with ka'as (grief), 1 my nefesh and my beten. 1

For my life is spent with grief, 1 and my years with groaning; 1 my ko'ach faileth because of mine avon (iniquity), 1 and my atzmot waste away. 1

I was a cherpah (reproach, scorn, disgrace) among all mine enemies, 1 but especially among my shchenim (neighbors), 1 and a dread to mine acquaintance; 1 they that did see me outside fled from me. 1

I am forgotten like a dead man out of mind; 1 I am like a keli oved (broken vessel). 1

For I have heard the dibbah (evil report, slander) of many; 1 terror was on every side; 1 while they conspire against me, 1 they plot to take my nefesh. 1

But I trust in Thee, Hashem; 1 I said, Thou art Elohai. 1

My times are in Thy yad; 1 deliver me from the yad of mine oyevim (enemies), 1 and from them that persecute me. 1

Make Thy face to shine upon Thy eved; 1 hoshi'eini (save me) for the sake of Thy chesed. 1

Let me not be put to shame, Hashem; 1 for I have called upon Thee; 1 let the resha'im be put to shame, 1 and let them keep silent in Sheol. 1

Let the siftei sheker (lying lips) be put to silence; 1 which speak insolent things with ga'avah (pride) 1 and contemptuously against the tzaddik. 1

Oh how great is Thy goodness, 1 which Thou hast stored up for them that fear Thee; 1 which Thou hast wrought for them that take refuge in Thee 1 before the Bnei Adam! 1

Thou shalt hide them b'seter (in the shelter) of Thy presence 1 from the intrigues of ish; 1 Thou shalt keep them safe in a sukkah 1 from the riv l'shonot (the strife of tongues, contentious lashon hora, backbiting, slander). 1

Baruch Hashem! For He hath showed me 1 His wondrous chesed in an Ir Matzor (besieged city). 1

For I said in my haste, 1 I am cut off from before Thine eyes; 1 nevertheless Thou heardest the voice of my tachanun (supplications) 1 when unto Thee I cried for help. 1

O love Hashem, all ye His Chasidim; 1 for Hashem preserveth the emunim (the faithful ones), 1 but He pays back in full the oseh ga'avah (the one acting in pride, haughtily). 1

Chazak! Be strong, let your levav take courage, 1 all ye that hope in Hashem.
