Psalms 78

(Maskil of Asaph) 1 incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 1

I will open my mouth in a mashal; 1 I will utter dark sayings from of old, 1

Which we have heard and known, 1 and Avoteinu have told us. 1

We will not hide them from their banim, 1 recounting to the dor acharon 1 the tehillot Hashem, and His power, 1 and His nifla'ot (wonderful works) that He hath done. 1

For He established edut in Ya'akov, 1 set torah in Yisroel, 1 which He commanded Avoteinu, 1 that they should make them known to their banim; 1

So that the dor acharon might know them, 1 even the banim which should be born; 1 who should arise and recount them to their banim; 1

That they might put their confidence in Elohim, 1 and not forget the ma'allei El (works of G-d), 1 but keep His mitzvot; 1

And might not be as their Avot, 1 a dor sorer u'moreh (stubborn and rebellious generation); 1 a generation that set not its lev aright, 1 and whose ruach was not faithful to G-d. 1

The Bnei Ephrayim, being armed, and shooting keshet (the bows), 1 turned back in the day of battle. 1

They kept not the Brit Elohim, 1 and refused to walk in His torah; 1

And forgot His works, 1 and His nifla'ot (wonders) that He had shown them. 1

Peleh (marvellous things) did He in the sight of their avot, 1 in Eretz Mitzrayim, in the sadeh (area) of Tzoan. 1

He divided the yam, and caused them to pass through; 1 and He made the mayim to stand like a heap. 1

In the daytime also He led them with an anan, 1 and all the lailah with an ohr of eish. 1

He split the rocks in the midbar, 1 and gave them drink as out of the great tehomot. 1

He brought streams also out of the rock, 1 and caused mayim to run down like rivers. 1

And they sinned yet more against Him 1 by provoking Elyon in the wilderness. 1

And they tested G-d by their lev 1 by demanding ochel for their lust. 1

And they spoke against Elohim; 1 they said, Can G-d spread a shulchan in the midbar? 1

Behold, He struck the Tzur, that the mayim gushed out, 1 and the streams overflowed; 1 can He give lechem also? 1 Can He provide meat for His people? 1

Therefore Hashem heard this, and was in wrath; 1 so an eish was kindled against Ya'akov, 1 and anger also came up against Yisroel; 1

Because they believed not in Elohim, 1 and trusted not in His Yeshu'ah (salvation); 1

Though He had commanded the clouds from above, 1 and opened the daletei Shomayim (doors of heaven), 1

And had rained down manna upon them to eat, 1 and had given them of the bread of Shomayim. + 78:24 See Yn 6:31 1

Ish did eat the bread of angels; 1 He sent them lechem to the full. 1

He caused an east wind to blow from Shomayim; 1 and by His oz He brought in the south wind. 1

He rained meat also upon them like aphar, 1 and winged fowls like the chol (sand) of the sea; 1

And He let it fall in the midst of their machaneh, 1 all around their mishkenot (habitations). 1

So they did eat, and were well filled; 1 for He gave them their own ta'avah (evil desire). 1

They were not estranged from their ta'avah. 1 But while their food was yet in their mouths, 1

The Af Elohim (wrath of G-d) came upon them, 1 and slaughtered the stoutest of them, 1 and cut down the bochurim of Yisroel. 1

For all this they sinned still, 1 and believed not in His nifla'ot (wondrous works). 1

Therefore their yamim did He consume in hevel (futility, vanity) 1 and their shanim in terror. 1

When He slaughtered them, then they sought Him; 1 and they returned and inquired diligently after G-d. 1

And they remembered that Elohim was their Tzur, 1 and the El Elyon their Go'el (Redeemer). 1

Nevertheless they did flatter Him with their mouth, 1 and they lied unto Him with their leshon. 1

For their lev was not right with Him, 1 neither were they faithful in His Brit. 1

But He, being full of compassion, 1 made kapporah for their avon and destroyed them not; 1 and He many times turned His anger away, 1 and did not stir up all His wrath. 1

For He remembered that they were but basar; 1 a ruach (wind) that passeth away, and cometh not again. 1

How oft did they provoke Him in the midbar, 1 and grieve Him in the desert! 1

Again and again they turned back and tested G-d, 1 and imposed limits on Kadosh Yisroel. 1

They remembered not His Yad (Hand, Power), 1 nor the yom (day) when He redeemed them from the enemy. 1

How He had wrought His otot in Mitzrayim, 1 and His mofetim in the area of Tzoan. 1

And had turned their rivers into dahm; 1 and their streams, that they could not drink. 1

He sent swarms of flies among them, 1 which devoured them; 1 and tzfarde'a (frogs), which destroyed them. 1

He gave also their crop unto the grasshopper, 1 and their produce unto the arbeh (locust). 1

He destroyed their gefen with barad (hail), 1 and their fig trees with frost. 1

He gave up their cattle also to the barad (hail), 1 and their livestock herds to hot thunderbolts. 1

He cast upon them His charon af, 1 evrah (wrath), and za'am (indignation), and tzarah, 1 by sending malachim ra'im among them. 1

He made a way for His anger; 1 He spared not their nefesh from mavet (death), 1 but gave their beasts over to the dever (plague); 1

And struck all the bechor in Mitzrayim; 1 the reshit (first fruit) of their strength in the ohalim of Cham; 1

But made His own people to go forth like tzon, 1 and guided them in the midbar like an eder (flock). 1

And He led them in safety, so that they had no terror; 1 but the yam overwhelmed their oyevim. 1

And He brought them to His gevul kadosh (His holy border), 1 even to this Har, which His Yamin had purchased. 1

He cast out the Goyim also before them, 1 and divided by measure a nachalah for them, 1 and made the Shivtei Yisroel 1 to dwell in their ohalim. 1

Yet they tested and provoked Elohim Elyon, 1 and were not shomer over His edot; 1

But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their avot; 1 they turned like a treacherous keshet. 1

For they provoked Him to anger with their high places, 1 and moved Him to jealousy with their pesilim. 1

When Elohim heard this, He was in wrath, 1 and greatly abhorred Yisroel; 1

So that He forsook the Mishkan of Shiloh, 1 the Ohel which He placed among adam (men); 1

And delivered His oz (strength) into captivity, 1 and His tiferet into the hand of the enemy. 1

He gave His people over also unto the cherev; 1 and was in wrath with His nachalah. 1

The eish consumed their bochurim; 1 and their betulot had no wedding celebration. 1

Their kohanim fell by the cherev; 1 and their almanot made no lamentation. 1

Then Adonoi awaked as one from sleep, 1 and like a gibbor that shouteth from yayin. 1

And He struck down His enemies behind; 1 He put them to cherpat olam (perpetual reproach). 1

Moreover He rejected the Ohel Yosef, 1 and chose not the Shevet Ephrayim; 1

But chose the Shevet Yehudah, 1 Har Tziyon which He loved. 1

And He built His Mikdash like heavenly heights, 1 like Eretz which He hath established l'olam. 1

He chose Dovid also His Eved, 1 and took him from the mikhle'ot tzon (sheepfolds); 1

From following the nursing ewes He brought him 1 to shepherd Ya'akov His people, 1 and Yisroel His nachalah. 1

So he shepherded them according to the tohm (integrity, guilelessness) of his lev; 1 and led them by the skillfulness of his hands.
