Psalms 55
(For the one directing. With Neginos. Maskil of Dovid) 1
Give ear to my tefillah, O Elohim; 1 and veil not Thyself from my techinnah (supplication). 1
Attend unto me, and hear me; 1 I wander restlessly in my si'ach (anxiety), and aloud I groan; 1
Because of the voice of the oyev (enemy), 1 because of the oppression of the rasha (evildoer); 1 for they cast aven (iniquity) upon me, 1 and in af (wrath, anger) cherish their malice against me. 1
My lev writhes within me; 1 and the terrors of mavet are fallen upon me. 1
Yirah va'ra'ad (fear and trembling) are come upon me, 1 and pallatzut (horror, shuddering) overwhelmed me. 1
And I said, Oh that I had wings like a yonah! 1 For then would I fly away and be at rest. 1
Hinei, then would I flee far off 1 and lodge in the midbar. 1 Selah 1
I would hasten to my place of shelter 1 from the ruach so'ah (wind of the tempest) and storm. 1
Destroy, Adonoi, and confuse their leshon; 1 for I see chamas (violence) and riv (strife) in the Ir (city). + 55:10 i.e., Jerusalem 1
Yomam and lailah they go about her + 55:11 Yerushalayim upon the chomot thereof; 1 aven also and amal are in the midst of her. + 55:11 Yerushalayim 1
Ruin is in the midst thereof; 1 oppression and mirmah (guile, fraud, deceit) depart not from her rechov. 1
For it was not an oyev (enemy) that reproached me; 1 then I could bear it; 1 neither was it he that had sinah (hatred) for me that did exalt himself against me; 1 then I could have hid myself from him; 1
But it was thou, an enosh (a man) equally, + 55:14 valued with myself 1 my aluf (intimate, friend), and me'yuda'i (deep acquaintance, familiar friend). + 55:14 See Ps 41:9 1
Together we took sweet sod (intimate conversation, fellowship, counsel), 1 and walked unto the Beis Elohim with the throng. 1
Let mavet seize upon them, 1 and let them go down chayyim into Sheol; 1 for ra'ot (evils) are in their dwellings, and among them. 1
As for me, I will call upon Elohim; 1 and Hashem shall save me. 1
Erev, and boker, and at tzohorayim (noon), 1 will I pray, and cry aloud; 1 and He shall hear my kol (voice). 1
He hath redeemed my nefesh in shalom 1 from the battle that was against me; 1 for there were rabbim against me. 1
El (G-d) shall hear, and afflict them, 1 even He that abideth kedem (of old, forever). 1 Selah 1 Because they do not change, 1 therefore they fear not Elohim. 1
He + 55:21 the faithless friend of verse 13-14 hath laid his hands on such 1 as are at shalom with him; 1 he hath broken his Brit. 1
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, 1 but war was in his lev; 1 his devarim were softer than shemen, 1 yet they were drawn swords. 1
Cast thy burden upon Hashem, 1 and He shall sustain thee; 1 He shall never suffer the tzaddik to be moved. 1
But Thou, O Elohim, shalt bring them down into the pit of shachat; 1 anshei damim umirmah (bloody and deceitful men) 1 shall not live out half their yamim; 1 but I will trust in Thee.
