Psalms 44

(For the one directing. Of the Bnei Korach. A maskil) 1

We have heard with our oznayim, O Elohim, 1 Avoteinu have told us, 1 what po'al (work) Thou hast wrought in their days, 1 in the times of old. 1

How Thou didst drive out the Goyim with Thy Yad, 1 but plantedst them; 1 how Thou didst afflict the peoples, 1 but for them Thou madest room. 1

For they got not eretz in possession by their own cherev, 1 neither did their own zero'a save them, 1 but Thy Yamin (Right Hand), and Thine Zero'a, 1 and the ohr (light) of Thy countenance, 1 because Thou favored them. 1

Thou art my Melech, O Elohim; 1 command yeshu'ot (deliverances) for Ya'akov. 1

Through Thee will we push down our enemies; 1 through Thy Shem will we trample them under that rise up against us. 1

For I will not trust in my keshet (bow), 1 neither shall my cherev save me. 1

But Thou hast saved us from tzareinu (our enemies), 1 and hast put them to shame that hated us. 1

In Elohim we boast kol hayom, 1 and praise Thy Shem l'olam (forever). 1 Selah 1

But Thou hast cast off, and disgraced us; 1 and goest not forth with tzivoteinu (our armies). 1

Thou makest us to turn back from before the tzar (enemy); 1 and they which hate us have taken plunder for themselves. 1

Thou hast given us up like tzon appointed for food; 1 and hast scattered us among the Goyim. 1

Thou sellest Amecha (Thy People) for a mere nothing, 1 and art not enriched by their price. 1

Thou makest us a cherpah (reproach) to our shchenim (neighbors), 1 a scorn and a derision to them that are all around us. 1

Thou makest us a mashal (byword) among the Goyim, 1 a shaking of the rosh among the peoples. 1

Kol hayom my dishonor is continually before me, 1 and the shame of my face hath covered me, 1

At the voice of him that reproacheth and revileth; 1 by reason of the oyev (enemy) and avenger. 1

All this is come upon us; 1 yet have we not forgotten Thee, 1 neither have we dealt falsely in Thy Brit. 1

Libenu (our heart) is not turned back, 1 neither have our steps departed from Thy way; 1

Though Thou hast crushed us in the makom (place, home, haunt) of jackals, 1 and covered us with the tzalmavet (shadow of death). 1

If we have forgotten the Shem of Eloheinu, 1 or stretched out our palms + 44:21 in worship to an el zar (foreign g-d); 1

Shall not Elohim search this out? 1 For He knoweth the secrets of the lev. 1

Yes, for Thy sake are we killed kol hayom; 1 we are counted as tzon (sheep) for the tivchah (slaughter). 1

Awake. Why sleepest Thou, Adonoi? 1 Arise, cast us not off lanetzach (forever). 1

Why hidest Thou Thy face, 1 and forgettest our oni (misery, affliction) and our oppression? 1

For our nefesh is bowed down to the aphar (dust); 1 our beten (belly, body) has deveykus with the dirt. 1

Arise for our help, 1 and redeem us for the sake of Thy chesed.
